Is there really a referee using the last name Hebner? Really? Also, as a referee, why do you have a catchphrase? Yes, he uses "Hebner" as a last name. Tried to talk him out of it. He's screwing himself over. I only use the catchphrase on these message boards. I don't use it at pro wrestling shows. "Everybody goes down for the 3 Count" P.S. On Friday, July 22nd at the Five Brothers Sullivan Convention Center, IPW (Impact Pro Wrestling) held a training seminar. This event was open to the public and held prior to their big show that was held later in the evening. IPW stars as well as IL talent and other who travel all over the US took part in this event. Two female wrestlers also participated. Twelve exhibition matches with an eight minute time limit were held in front of WWE HOFers Gerald Brisco, Jim Ross & Terry Funk. The legends would watch the matches and critique the talent. The audience consisted of a few fans, the wrestlers supporting their peers and friends/family. Some of the matches were enjoyable and some needed improvement. Everyone who participated worked their butts off. Only drawback for the audience was that the evaluations were held in the backstage area. Would have liked to have heard what the veterans had to say to the young talent. This was something different and not something the average fan can see on a daily basis. 1. Nate Alsin defeated Montoya X. 2. Sexual Pleasure (Matty Star & Ryan Slade) w/ manager Axel Grease had a time limit draw with IPW champion Nicky Free & Big Harley Jackson. The crowd got into this match and both teams made it an interesting contest. 3. Sparrow pinned Tony Sly with a body press off the top rope. Two of IPW's top stars. 4. "CBK" (Comeback Kid) Michael Rhodes scored an impressive win over AJ Smooth. 5. IPW Tag Team Champions in a non-title match, Justin Decent and Ugly defeated James Jefferies and "The Big Picture" Ashton Christopher. The crowd chanting "Justin Beiber" comments towards Jefferies made this match enjoyable. Match started off good but a couple botched moves slowed the pace. Nice recovery by both teams to have a strong finish. 6. Ace Martino used the tights to defeat Jake O'Neil. Martino is a DREAMWAVE regular. Nice to see him score a "W" for a change. 7. Arye Davari lost to Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana. One of the better matches of the afternoon. Colt was on his game as usual and had the crowd in his pocket. 8. Derek Cornell defeated Shawn Nautilus. Another solid match. Cornell was on the final IWA Mid-South card last year. Both men travel all over the US and are hoping to seek some experience in foreign land. 9. Seth Allen defeated the Great Malaki. Been a while since I've seen Malaki in action. Almost did not recognize him with his haircut. Disappointed that he dropped his gimmick where he set his wrists on fire before the match. Good effort by both men. 10. Ryan Slade defeated Angelus Layne. The first of two inner-gender matches and Slade's second match of the seminar. The Anchovie, who has a soft spot for red heads, was quite fond of Angelus Layne. She showed a lot of spirit but fell victim to Slade who won using a version of the Perfect Plex. 11. Mason Beck won over Cousin Bobby. Two more IL stars that really gave a physical contest. This match seemed to have drew a positive reaction from Gerald Brisco. Mason Beck scored a very impressive dropkick for a big guy. Both men did a great job. 12. Cheyenne used the swanton bomb to pin the Great Malaki in the second inner-gender match. Cheyenne was very impressive that afternoon and always showed to be a good worker in the past. Thank you for the review of the tryout matches. We had 3 referees involved, including: Referee Jason Harding, Referee J.D. Hebner and myself, Referee Billy J. I had a great time performing in front of Jim Ross, Gerald Brisco, Terry Funk and my peers/friends. Jim Ross stated that I did a good job of ref'ing and wished me best of luck. Pretty awesome. Impact Pro Wrestling (IPW) put on a great show last Friday evening (7/22/11) at the Five Brothers Sullivan Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa. It was part of the Hall of Fame weekend set up by the National Wrestling Dan Gable Museum located in Waterloo. IPW is a successful indy promotion in Iowa. Owner Troy Peterson does a great job with his talent. The last two shows during Hall of Fame weekend have been a success. WWE HOFers who were on hand included Terry Funk, Jim Ross, Gerald Brisco, "Mad Dog" Vachon & Hacksaw Jim Duggan. AWA Legend Baron Von Rashke, Danny Hodge, Bob Roop and Fritz Von Goering were other legends that were on hand to help make this event successful. They were all too happy to mingle with the fans as well as sign autographs and pose for pictures. The afternoon started with a training seminar where matches were staged for feedback by Ross, Funk & Brisco. I will give those results in another thread. Now for the results of IPW's big show of the year that also featured some IL talent. The bell time was scheduled for 7pm. 1. #1 Contender's Battle Royal The winner of this match would face the IPW Champion Nicky Free in the co-main event. IMPACT star Austin Aries entered himself in the battle royal still in his street clothes. IL favorites Mason Beck and Cousin Bobby entered as well as IPW stars Big Harley Jackson, the Dark Avenger, HAVYK and a host of others. Aries was knocked under the ropes early on by Jackson. Aries would sit at ringside until one man was left but his run-in failed. IPW star James Jefferies earned the right to meet the IPW champion that evening. Winner: James Jefferies 2. "Torturous" Tony Sly vs Colt Cabana Where ever Cabana goes, he seems to get a crowd going. The Iowa fans were cheering on the ROH star. The crowd was really into this match and Tony Sly more then held his own. The experienced veteran in Cabana caught his opponent in a roll-up. Winner: Colt Cabana 3. Marshall Scott vs Sparrow This was one of the better matches of the evening. Sparrow is a local favorite and had the crowd on his side. Scott was on fire early scoring a take down and giving a stiff kick to Sparrow's mid-section. This bout had a combination of great mat wrestling with many flying high spots. A very impressive surf board was used by Sparrow late in the bout. A flying knee off the ropes by Scott would end the match. Winner: Marshall Scott *Intermission to announce all of the legends in attendance as well as wrestling author/historian Scott Teal. 4. "The Big Picture" Ashton Kristopher vs "Latin Skillz" Montoya X This was a battle of two bulls colliding. A ground-n-pound style match filled with shoulder blocks and chops. Very physical contest all the way. Montoya X took a nasty spill over the top rope and felt an impressive elbow drop by Ashton Kristopher. The popular Latin sensation would emerge victorious with a splash off the ropes. Winner: Montoya X 5. IPW Champion Nicky Free vs James Jefferies. Nicky Free was the talented young man who I interviewed last year and had IPW's classic match in its history with Austin Aries. Free is now the reigning IPW champ and had to take own the battle royal winner in James Jefferies. Jefferies, who is small in size and resembles Justin Bieber, has talent and put on a very entertaining contest. Nicky's size over the challenger played a huge factor early on in the title match. Jefferies was able to ground the champion with an arm bar. He kept Free on the mat for a while. Free delivered an impressive power bomb late in the match and Jefferies managed to kick out and even deliver an awesome super kick. Free lost his temper and brought in a steel chair. The classic ending was the referee disposing the chair while the champ scored a "nut shot" on his opponent. Winner: Nicky Free 6. The Main Event: Team Canada (AJ Smooth, Matty Star & Ryan Slade) vs. Justin Decent and Ugly (IPW Tag Champs) & WWE HOFer Hacksaw Jim Duggan The crowd went wild in this match as chants of "U-S-A" were echoed throughout the Five Brothers Sullivan Convention Center. The classic nasty Canadians vs the Patriotic Americans. Duggan had the crowd on their feet and still shows that he has "it". This match was a free-for-all from start to finish. Duggan naturally scored the pin with his famous football stance block. The crowd of 300-plus loved it. Hopefully someone from IPW will share in the final attendance number. Winners: Justin Decent, Ugly & Hacksaw Jim Duggan Hats off once again to Troy Peterson and the entire IPW staff & roster to help make this a successful weekend for the Dan Gable Museum. It was a honor to finally meet referee Billy J. Many wrestlers did go down for the count. I want to personally thank Mr. Peterson for saving me a front row seat. If you are ever traveling in Iowa, check out IPW or look them up on www.impactprowrestling.com Check out the results thread in a few days for the results of the training seminar. I will also be attempting to conduct an over-the-phone interview with WWE HOFer "Mad Dog" Vachon. Look for that as well. Thank you for the great review of the show! It was a fun night in Waterloo, Iowa! It was great to meet you in person. All of the legends were awesome. Can't wait till next year! "Everybody goes down for the 3 Count" P.S. Thanks for the info Billy! Its about a 5 hour ride from the Chicago suburbs for me, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to make the trek! Looking forward to meeting the guys that were mentioned and checking out the museum. Should be a great time! I read that buying a ticket for the pro show allows you to get into the Fanfest part of it....how about the legends roundtable on Sat..is there another ticket for admission to that that I could get in advance? Just wanted to cover all the bases before I drove out there! Thanks for your help if you read this! I did find this information out for you on the wrestling museum website ( wrestlingmuseum.org): Anyone who purchases a banquet ticket or a professional wrestling show ticket will be admitted to all events hosted at the museum. So that would include the round table and other activities. Billy, any other names that might be there that you know of besides those already announced? I'm not sure of other names that might be there. In the past years, legends have shown up unannounced to the weekend's festivities. Your best bet is to be sure you come to Waterloo, Iowa on July 22nd-23rd. You never know who you might run into or see. "Everybody goes down for the 3 Count" P.S. You have listed above that Sparrow will be wrestling a Guest Star Opponent that will be named on June 8th on the IMPACT PRO WRESTLING website. I've been on the website but haven't seen the name of this opponent. Who is it? Our website is in the process of being re-done I believe. I'm unaware of Sparrow's opponent at this time. The card is subject to change. If you're concerned, feel free to contact the promoter at wresshow@yahoo.com"Everybody goes down for the 3 Count" P.S.
