The RWF (Rebellious Wrestling Federation) held its first show in over two years last Sunday, May 20th at the Latin American Social Club in Sterling, IL. The show was a benefit for the American Cancer Society. The venue was a decent place with air conditioning, an open bar with reasonable prices and good lighting. There was also a food court with burgers and hot dogs. The burgers were very good.
A meet-n-greet was held before the show. Former WWE wrestler Mantaur, Ryan Howe from Tough Enough, Joey Grunge, "The Midwest Mauler" JB Payne, Nikki St. John and others were on hand. Other wrestlers like Grin and Bobby Houston were available during intermission. There was a silent auction to bid on items. Most of the items were autographed 8x10s by wrestling legends such as Tito Santana, The Bushwhackers, Ken Shamrock, Brutus Beefcake & Hulk Hogan. The White Sox donated an autographed 8x10 by pitcher John Danks. That was the item that I won.
A shout out to members of Kreider Services, Inc. for attending the show. Kreider Services deals with those who are autistic or mentally handicapped. About ten clients and four staff members were in attendance. I sat next to a lovely young lady Asheley and her client Jeremy. Jeremy is a long time WWE fan who had a blast at the show. Asheley is a direct service provider who is certified in IL. She assists her clients to perform different jobs. The higher functioning clients have paid jobs. She was a fan during WWE's Attitude Era. Asheley told me at intermission that she was enjoying the show and wouldn't mind coming back. It was neat watching the entire group getting into the show.
Mr. Ricolo was our ring announcer for the evening. Senior official Steve Cain was also on hand. RWF owner Sean David waltzed down to ringside and called out the entire locker room. The show open with a ten bell count to honor the memory of promoter Ed Chuman. Another bell count was rung to honor those who lost their battle to cancer & those who either beat cancer or are currently dealing with it.
The show began with Chazz Moretti along with his group Machine, Gavin Anderson, Dehok, Grin & Nikki St. John attacking RWF owner Sean David. Moretti claims he is now in charge. Sean was sent to the nearest hospital.
1. Grin vs Bobby "The Business" Houston
Easily one of the best matches if not the best match of the night. Crowd popped for this match. A sunset flip gave Houston the "W".
Winner: Bobby "The Business" Houston
2. Cecil Cerveza vs El Jose Cuervo Magnifico in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Lucha Libre Rules Match
Easily the worse match of the night. A very short and pointless match.
Winner: Cecil Cerveza
3. Gavin Alexander vs Judd the Janitor
Another ho-hum match. I sat near Judd's family. Watching his little son cheer him on was cool. A pounce by Alexander gave him the win.
Winner: Gavin Alexander
4. Mike Horning vs Tony Rican
Another very good match. The 2nd best match of the first half of the show. This match should have went longer. A ten minute time limit draw ruined what could have been an excellent match.
Winner: A Draw
5. WPPF Champion "The Midwest Mauler" JB Payne vs "Handsome" Milo Cash w/Rudo Cortez
A solid match. Heard of the Mauler but never seen him in action. Very nice guy. The Midwest Mauler used the classic brass knuckles to retain his title.
Winner: JB Payne
6. Willie "Da Bomb" Richardson and Trauma vs Mitch Blake and Jimmy Blaze
Great to see Mitch Blake in action. Been a long time for me. One of the longer matches but very entertaining. Another match that had pops from the crowd. A double pin for Willie's team.
Winners: Willie "Da Bomb" Richardson and Trauma
7. Nikki St. John vs Melanie Cruise
Excellent ladies match. Not use to see Cruise play a face. She did a great job.
Winner: Melanie Cruise
* Trever Blanchard and Ruff Crossing attacked Cruise after the match. Ryan Howe made the save setting up a tag match later on.
Intermission
8. Machine, Gavin Alexander, Dehok vs Judd the Janitor, Joey Grunge & Johnathan Napier in a fans bring the weapons match & elimination match.
This was a wild one. Garbage cans, kendo sticks, toy guitars, forks and many other items were used. Napier stapled a $1 to the buttocks of Alexander. The winning team had to make all three members of their opponents say "I Quit". Machine was the soul survivor defeating Napier.
Winners: Machine, Gavin Alexander & Dehok
9. Brian Blade vs Cecil Cerveza
Never seen big Brian Blade wrestle. He was announced as a native of Nebraska. Cerveza gave a better performance then in his earlier match. Fans were not into this match after the wild match they just saw. Blade used an impressive version of the F-5.
Winner: Brian Blade
10. Ryan Howe and Melanie Cruise vs Trever Blanchard and Ruff Crossing
This was an entertaining match. The fans were 100% behind Cruise and Howe. Howe looked in much better shape and his in-ring work continues to improve since his Tough Enough days.
Winners: Cruise and Howe
11. Main Event: RWF Rebel royal to crown the first ever RWF Champion
Many of tonight's competitors including the two female wrestlers entered this match. It was a traditional battle royal. The last two competitors had to win by pin fall or submission. Machine and Ryan Howe were the final two men. Sean David returned after his horrible beating from earlier in the show. Instead of attacking Machine, David hit the popular Howe with a chair. Sean's reasoning was you can't keep evil down.
Winner: New RWF Champion Machine
* Machine broke character to thank the fans, everyone in the locker room and all the cancer survivors. Machine showed why he is a champion.
-RWF is scheduled to return to Sterling, IL on August 19th with Machine taking on Rhino in a steel cage. Check the upcoming show section for details.
-My friend attempted a head count. Maybe 100 people. Yes, this show did not live up to the hype. Was this a great show? No! Was this a horrible show? No! Was this a solid show? Yes!
Since I legitimately won the trivia contest, some may not count my opinion of the show. I'd like to hear from those who were also at the show. It was a decent show especially for a company that hasn't been around in over two years and has an owner who is only 21 years old. Is Sean perfect? Hell no! Does he love the business? Yes! Will he get better? I believe he has another "Trick Or Beat 2009" in him.
Mr. Ricolo told me after the show that Sean gave a great effort for a young man. He needs a few years to mature. Mr. Ricolo believes he'll be a great promoter in a few years. Had Sean promoted this show in his 40s then maybe he could be laughed out of the business but not at 21. Losing a HOFer like Bob Orton under a week before the show didn't help. Hard to replace someone like that. Unfortunately Ed wasn't around to advise him.
Sean did put on a solid show, made a crowd of 100 fans happy and tried to help out a great organization in the American Cancer Society.
Floor is now open. The people who wanted this show doomed from the start can now have their fun. Some people do have legitimate reasons to dislike Sean and that's their business. This is for people like Big D and Howie who wanted this show to fail so badly and had no reason to hate on this show. Have away!
