One of the biggest crowds in 3XW history packed the McCarroll Gym and helped raise over $4,000 for the family of Christian Arnold while witnessing one of the most exciting events 3XW has ever held.
Arnold is a Ottumwa youngster who recently had to undergo a leg amputation due to a battle with cancer. All proceeds from the show went directly to his family - who was sitting ringside - with all wrestlers and staff donating their time to compete. Not only that, but many area stores and companies donated money, advertising, pop, food, raffle prizes, etc. to the effort.
Wrestling aside, one of the true highlights of the evening was the auction for a steel chair signed by all the wrestlers who took part in the show. The winning bid was a whopping $500 and the winner gave the chair directly back to the Arnold family to keep.
This was easily the loudest crowd ever at a 3XW event, thanks in large part to the vocal amount of kids in the audience.
Also - a local news affiliate was on hand to film a story about the event.
Results:
1. Brian Ash and "Delicious" Devin Carter beat Gage Octane and "Beautiful" Brent Filmore, accompanied by Todd Countryman, after Ash used a Devastator to defeat Filmore. Filmore is a old friend of Octane's and was an honorary member of the Gentlemen's Club on this night.
After the match, an extremely upset Commissioner Countryman ruled that due to the result of this match, that Filmore would face Carter and Octane would face Ash later in the night.
2. "The Rockstar" Jimmy Rockwell successfully defended the 3XW Cruiserweight title against "The Unbreakable" Zach Thompson in their first singles meeting ever in 3XW. This match was definitely one of the best cruiserweight title matches in a very long time. Rockwell finished Thompson off with a senton bomb off the top rope. Both men also busted out a couple of insane flips to the outside of the ring.
3. Mia Martinez beat Malia Hosaka in a rematch from Friday night in Carlisle.
4. In the bizarro-world tag team match of the night, the team of the Bayou Outlaws - Maddog McDowell and Aaron Masterson beat the team of Ricky Kwong and Ryan Slade. Outside of 3XW, Masterson and McDowell team on a regular basis and are a very successful team. Kwong was fighting extremely dirty tonight ,acting very evil toward the children in the crowd, and worked well with one of 3XW's most-hated men in Slade. The only explanation for his behavior I can devise is that Jeremy Wyatt's vicious assault on Kwong in Carlisle the night before knocked Kwong completely loopy, causing him to believe that teaming with Slade was a good idea.
5. In a shocker, "Beautiful" Brent Filmore beat "Delicious" Devin Carter thanks in large part due to the interference of Carter's longtime rival Casanova. With referee Travis Peterson distracted by Filmore, Casanova crotched Carter on the top turnbuckle, allowing Filmore to hit a superplex for the win.
6. Gage Octane, accompanied by Todd Countryman, defeated Brian Ash following a Spine Tigler in another match that featured attempted interference from Casanova, who this time was run off by Zach Gowen. An excellent around-the-arena brawl, theses two picked up right where they left off in their feud in 2007, which ended when Octane beat Ash in a "Loser Leaves 3XW" match. Tonight was the first time Ash has competed since that match.
7. Former WWE star Zach Gowen defeated 3XW Heavyweight champion Casanova to become the NEW 3XW Heavyweight champion. The end of the match featured absolute mass chaos, as everyone on the show become embroiled in a riotous brawl. Just as Gowen looked like he was going to finish Casanova with a moonsault, he was tossed off the top turnbuckle by Brent Filmore and referee Travis Peterson was tossed from the ring by Gage Octane. All hell broke loose as the 3XW roster ran to the ring to come to the respective aid of Gowen or Casanova, leaving the match without a ref for at least three minutes as wrestlers brawled outside the ring.
During the madness, Gowen and Casanova were down on the mat, with Gowen getting up and reversing an attack by Casanova. Gowen leapt to the top rope and delivered a beautiful Moonsault. Steve Biley, who was tending to referee Peterson at ringside, quickly dove into the ring and counted the pin, declaring Gowen the new champion in an emotional scene with the crowd giving him a standing ovation.
In an interview I conducted with Gowen in the locker room, he described how he lost his leg to the same cancer that Christian Arnold battled and how winning the 3XW Heavyweight title at a benefit event like this is the top moment of his career. You can view this excellent interview right here:
