3XW presents "Paint the Town Green" - Des Moines Social Club, 1408 Locust St. - March 20, 2009
Before we get to the results, I'll share some details of our incredible new venue. The Des Moines Social Club is the new home base of 3XWrestling and with the move to a new permanent Des Moines-area home came a number of fantastic changes to enhance the live experience and overall production of the show. These include:
- over double the previous amount of speakers in use and enhanced sound equipment. From my vantage point, everyone sounded incredibly clear on the mic while speaking, which has been an issue in the past.
- an actual stage lighting system. These means there is now lights specifically above the ring for ring lighting and a separate set of lights, including a spotlight and strobe lights, for the entrance way. When wrestlers entered the arena, only the the entrance lights would shine on them and the ring lights were off, making the entrances look incredibly cool.
- The venue itself - large enough to hold a couple hundred fans, but in an incredibly intimate setting and all fans were provided with really comfortable, older-style office chairs.
- The ring has been upgraded, including green turnbuckle pads that spell out 3XW vertically, a letter/number per turnbuckle. The aprons also now green text that reads "3XW" and "3XWRESTLING.COM"
- All the sound, lighting, "hard" camera and commentary equipment that myself and Chad Mylan use for the DVDs but record live during shows is located in a fantastic "crow's nest" about 20 feet above the arena. We can see out over the entire ringside area thanks to two large square cutouts and one smaller cutout where the camera is placed. It gives us a "press box" effect and provides the fans much more room to maneuver on the floor due to less equipment being in the way.
As far as a live show goes, the new enhancements made a night and day difference toward making each event feel extremely important and professional. Words alone can't do it justice - if you've ever been to a single 3XW event, I highly encourage you to return once again just so you can see how much everything has changed.
Results:
1. 3XW Cruiserweight champion "The Rockstar" Jimmy Rockwell defeated "Torturous" Tony Sly in a non-title match following a spectacular senton bomb from the top rope. Sly, the first ever 3XW cruiserweight champion, now competes as a heavyweight. Rockwell lost to Sly at Black Friday in November and avenged his defeat here in impressive fashion.
2. Mark Sterling, with Gentlemen's Club counterpart and 3XW Commissioner Todd Countryman, defeated Brady A. Dezire and the debuting Dirk Wilder in a triple threat match after pinning Wilder. This was supposed to be a singles encounter between Dezire and Wilder, but Sterling and Coutryman interepted only a minute into the match. Countryman declared that because sterling didn't have another contracted match tonight, he was inserting him in the match. Sterling, one-half of the 3XW Tag Team champions with Gage Octane, won in impressive fashion.
3. Mia Martinez beat Malia Hosaka with a small package. Much more back-and-forth than their previous encounters, Hosaka still tortured Martinez with a unique array of sinister maneuvers and submission holds. In the end, however, Martinez was able to roll Hosaka up and pick up the win. With the victory, Martinez now leads this series 2-1.
4. "The Rebel" Jeremy Wyatt defeated Tyler Cook to win the 3XW Pure Wrestling championship following an Oklahoma Roll pin while he held onto to Cook's tights. A great match that saw Cook's forehead get busted wide open. As a result, the top of Wyatt's white wrestling gear was stained blood red. Both men punished one another with vicious strikes and earned a number of very close nearfalls with excellent moves. Following the match, Wyatt attacked Cook from behind, only for "Delicious" Devin Carter to run out and save Cook from the attack.
5. Tag Team Gauntlet Match: The new team of Sexy and Smooth ("The Canadian Sex Icon" Ryan Slade and A.J. Smooth) beat Kwongercricket ("The Asian Sensation" Ricky Kwong and "The 80s Pop Icon" Donnie Peppercricket), The Horndogs (Maddog McDowell and Krotch) and The High Flyers ("The Unbreakable" Zach Thompson and Mike Sydal) to become the No. 1 contenders for the 3XW Tag Team titles. Eliminations were as follows:
- McDowell and Krotch eliminated Kwongercricket after an interfering A.J. Smooth distracted the referee and Ryan Slade viciously broke his flagpole over Kwong's nose.
- Slade and Smooth quickly eliminated McDowell and Krotch, pinning an already worn down Krotch who was still recovering from facing Kwongercricket. McDowell, who was out on the floor, could not jump in and break up the pin in time.
- Slade and Smooth beat Sydal and Thompson, using more underhanded tactics to distract Sydal and the ref, allowing Slade to crush Thompson with a straitjacket-style Canadian Destroyer (Slade held onto Thompson's crossed arms and not his waist).
This excellent match featured a number of really impressive double-team moves by all four teams - a russian legsweep/STO combo by Smooth and Slade and a springboard kick by Krotch onto an opponent being back suplexed by McDowell among many others -and was really an excellent display of what to expect from 3XW tag teams in the future. Other highlights include Thompson connecting on an amazing flip from the top rope to Sexy and Smooth on the floor and Sydal flying off the top moments later with an insane moonsault.
6. Kraig Keesaman beat Aaron Masterson after reversing Masterson's Showcase Showdown finishing move into the dreaded Nordic Spike. This was the debut of the zany Masterson's new "Price is Right" stylings in Des Moines and he received very loud approval from the crowd. A really great, surprisingly back-and-forth contest. Keesaman added another tally to his impressive win total over the past year.
7. Casanova successfully defended the 3XW Heavyweight title over "Delicious" Devin Carter, pinning Carter following interference by Jeremy Wyatt. Wyatt pulled Carter down, crotching him on the top rope, and knocked him off the top. Wyatt and Casanova continued to work over Carter following the match until an angry Tyler Cook ran into the ring and attacked Wyatt while Casanova bailed from the ring. Eventually, Wyatt wiggled his way under the rope and he and Casanova celebrated in the entrance aisle while Cook attended to Carter in the ring.
Following the postmatch chaos, 3XW President Skylar Pierce announced that the main event of "April Showers...OF POWER!" on April 17 will be a tag team match with Devin Carter and Tyler Cook taking on Jeremy Wyatt and Casanova - if either Wyatt or Casanova are pinned or submitted, they lose their singles title to whomever beat them.
It was an absolutely incredible night of action and I would highly encourage to pick up "Paint the Town Green" on DVD when it's released by SEP Video. Please join us again at the Des Moines Social Club on Friday, April 17 for "April Showers....Of POWER!" Be sure to watch 3XWrestling.com in the coming weeks for the next episode of 3XW "Outside the Ring," featuring more news about the big main event on the 17th and other matches on the card.
