Well, the first show is in the books as the saying goes and what a night! Fans commented all night long on the building and the professional set up for the show including a great sound system and lighted entrance way. The facility itself is great with plenty of room, a great concession stand with reasonable prices, a great selection of food and even beer available. Our thanks to the facility staff also who were friendly and helpful.
The first show from VIP Wrestling drew 96 fans paid, mostly ringside, to witness a great night of action with full attendance being about 110 including guests. There were all ages from kids to college students to regular wrestling fans from places as far away as Louisville including a lot of folks that I've never seen at wrestling in Evansville before. There are evidently a group of wrestling fans willing to buy what VIP is selling. How big that group becomes only time will tell.
Now on to the action....
Due to injuries, transportation problems and last minute scheduling conflicts some matches were realigned but VIP had already had contingency plans in place and the show still had eight action packed matches.
Walt came out and welcomed the fans to the show and thanked all those who had worked so hard to make this show happen. He singled out the Oboys and VIP webmaster Gary Wilson in particular as helping the VIP management keep the faith and believe that there was a spot for VIP in the southern Indiana and Midwest area.
Match 1
Nick Brubaker vs JP Lightning
This match featured Brubaker who wrestles regularly in Central and Southern Illinois vs JP Lightning who is well known to Evansville fans and in the last year has become well known to wrestling fans in Tennessee, Illinois, North Carolina, and all over Indiana and Kentucky. Brubaker is a big muscular kid, and a big mouth to go along with it. He kept a running self commentary going during most of the match which irritated the fans to no end. Make no mistake Brubaker may be thingyy but to paraphrase Kid Rock "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up" Lightning was at a size disadvantage but used to technical skill and speed to counter the power of his opponent. In the end JP was victorious and the crowd was amped. Both these guys will be heard from in the future and impressed the booking committee who will decide the seeds for the Best of the Midwest
Tournament.
Match 2
"Time Bomb" Tommy Danger vs Kashmir Hunk
This was the return to the ring of Tommy Danger after about a year absence. Danger has always been a big kid and is even bigger now. He may have lost a step in the speed and quickness departments but he has definitely increased in the power category. Both these guys are well known in Evansville. they have always treated the fans to some hard hitting fierce action and tonight was no exception. Danger was blasting Kashmir as we saw the short fuse temper he is known for and his opponents still feel the day after. Then out of nowhere and to the fan's delight, Kashmir Hunk was able to hit a flipping pile driver I'll call the "Starmaker". I think the imprint of Danger's head was left in the ring like it was the wet cement on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Match 3
Rush Wrestling Enterprises' Justin Andrews with Mr Rodney Rush vs Tony Kozina
(Dacobra had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict)
Mr.Rush has himself quite a stable of up and coming talent including Jesse Emerson, and Quick Carter Gray who are making a huge impact on the Midwest wrestling scene and gathering gold everywhere they go. Today it was "Pure Dynamite" Justin Andrews who earned that nicname by turning on and defeating his former mentor Billy Roc. Andrews and Mr. Rush were determined to make that same impact here in VIP. Tony Kozina had other ideas however. He has been wrestling mainly on the west coast in many feds including Pro Wrestling Guerrilla until recently moving to the Midwest where he has begun to make a name for himself as well. Today he gave Andrews all he wanted and more with up tempo strong style wrestling. Dynamite comes in small packages would be the perfect cliche to describe Kozina's style. Despite interference from Mr. Rush, who could definitely benefit from the Dale Carnegie course on how to win friends and influence people, infuriated the fans and enjoyed every minute of it.Finally Mr. Rush aided Andrews by adding extra leverage to a roll up near the ropes out of the ref's sight and Andrews was given the win.
Match 4
"Superstar" Shane Matthews vs Lash "The Wicked" Gibson vs "Simply Marvelous" Mitch Ryder
This match featured Matthews who has wrestled in Evansville before making his return from West Virginia. I'm sorry to say time has not improved his disposition and he is still an egotistical jerk. Lash Gibson is a youngster with good size and definitely has a future in the business. The Marvelous one needs no introduction to Evansville Wrestling. As I said Gibson has a future in the business unfortunately that future is still a way off and the two men he was wrestling today had too much knowledge and experience. As Gibson was firing up in the end with Matthews on the outside, he went for a spine-buster his knee gave out and as he collapsed to the ring with Ryder. Ryder looked like he may have tweaked his knee and Matthews took advantage of the opportunity to reenter the ring toss Ryder to the outside and roll up Gibson with a handful of tights and gain the win.
Match 5
MsChif vs Mia Martinez
The ladies were in action next featuring NWA & SHIMMER Women's Champion MsChif facing PGWA wrestler Mia Martinez. They went right after each other with MsChif using a size advantage and her experience to gain the upper hand . Mia was game and fought hard but MsChif used submission holds and power to punish her opponent. Her screams rang through the building startling everyone including the ref and she finished Martinez off with the Desecrator to pick up the pinfall.
Match 6
Shank "The Freak" Barzini vs Ricochet
This was a battle of clashing styles the methodical power and intensity of Barzini vs the high flying agility of Ricochet and this match did not disappoint. Several times Ricochet took to the air while Barzini did everything he could to ground him including vicious kicks and a huge power slam. After Ricochet went over the top rope to the outside onto a dazed Shank, they both unleashed a barrage of offense much to the delight of the fans ringside. As the ref was nearing the end of a ten count and both men were trying to return to the ring, Ricochet launched himself over the top rope at the same time delivering a kick to the back of Shank's head knocking him from the apron to the floor. The ref finished the ten count and Ricochet came away with a hard fought victory. Shank was not happy and threw a tantrum after the match taking out some chairs on his way to the back.
Match 7
"Full Throttle" "Zero G"
Aaron Scott & Brandon Marino vs CJ Esparza & Brett Gakiya
Although "Full Throttle" has worked in Evansville before they are still relatively new to the area part of the West Coast to the Midwest migration I mentioned earlier which has included These two, Tony Kozina, and ROH Davey Richards who trained these two. Richards will be making his way to VIP next month. Zero G is well known in Central Illinois and the upper Midwest having held titles in almost every fed there and having memorable feuds with Danny Daniels & Trik Davis,"The Feature Presentation" Eric Ruffington & Blake Steel, and "The Hybrids" Jason Lyte and Donovan Cain. This match was about as fast paced and action packed as you can get. The term organized chaos springs to mind. This was tag team wrestling at its best as both teams worked like a well oiled machine using solid tag team strategy and moves coupled with an intensity that thrilled the fans. During the match there were standing ovations and V-I-P chants rang through the building. In the end as " Zero G" was setting up to finish off the larger "Full Throttle" with a double team move, Scott was able to counter and then catch Gakiya in a Fireman's carry as he leaped off the top and then set him up on his shoulders and his partner Marino launched himself off the top to Bulldog him in a modified "Doomsday Device" to pick up the pin. Way too much action to describe here! BUY THE DVD! (Shameless merchandising Plug)
On a side note
Evansville fans are familiar with "The Hybrids" who are coming soon to VIP as are "The Feature Presentation." With these four teams plus commitments from "Naptown Dragons" Scotty Vortekz & xOMGx, "The Irish Airborne" Dave & Jake Crist,"The Hooligans" Devin & Mason Cutter, and "The Northstar Express" Darin Corbin & Ryan Cruz, fans of Tag Team Wrestling are going to love VIP Wrestling. That kind of talent on tap can only bring in more looking to match themselves against the best.
MAIN EVENT
CZW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
"All Star" Chuck Taylor vs Champion "The Psycho Shooter" Drake Younger
with Mr. Rodney Rush
Yes you read that right Mr. Rush came out all smiles with Rush Wrestling Enterprises' latest acquisition and was almost drooling over the thought of adding more gold to his stable. Chuck was his usual charming self threatening small children including one who took off running like he was being chased by the devil himself. Evansville is very familiar with both of these two men who have had classic matches in the past and today was no different. Taylor unleashed his full arsenal of moves and Younger was as hard hitting as ever. There was constant interference from Mr. Rush and at one point Taylor even pulled the ref to the side and complained of rug burns from the AstroTurf surface outside the ring and started to pull down his tights and show the ref. All of this in order to give Rush time to attack Younger with kicks and chokes. Toward the end it looked like the cheating ways of RWE would be successful as Rush distracted the ref and tossed a chain to Taylor. Drake was able to duck the punch and come away with a victory to retain the title. Afterward Chuck tried to frame Drake with the chain but the ref would have none of it. Then Shank "The Freak" Barzini attacked Younger from behind and a beat-down ensued until Kashmir Hunk, JP Lightning , and Ricochet came out to make the save. Fortunately for the fans Rush wasn't quick enough and ended up trapped in the ring. The fans were extremely happy when Drake hoisted him on his shoulders and delivered a DVD. He then lectured "The Freak" about trying to make a name off of him and said anytime he wanted to he could climb into the squared circle. The fans were unable to contain their joy as Shank and Taylor left the arena with Rush strung across Taylor like a back pack
It was a great night of wrestling action and if you weren't there then avoid the ridicule of your friends by planning on being in the house on May 23rd as VIP Wrestling returns to The Metro Sports Center. Already signed to appear ROH Star Davey Richards, Egotistico Fantastico, Prince Mustafa Ali, Jason Hades, Sal Thomaselli, NWA and SHIMMER Women's Champion MsChif, Tony Kozina, "Superstar" Shane Matthews, "Full Throttle" Aaron Scott & Brandon Marino, Shank "The Freak Barzini, JP Lightning, Kashmir Hunk, Drew Haskins and more.
