Resistance was held Saturday June 6th, 2009 at the VFW Contigny Post 367 in Joliet, IL. The show featured four qualifying matches for the Underground Championship tournment, a dog collar match in the main event, and a surprise change of heart in one of Underground's most beloved players.
Match 1: "Love Machine" Matt Longtime vs. "Latin Lover" Tony Rican, qualifying match.
These two fan favorites had the crowd divided with who to root for. Longtime used his size advantage early on and was able to keep Rican from mounting a strong offensive series. As the match went on, the Love Machine used his power to wear down the Latin Lover to the point where Longtime was able take the time to pose for the crowd and do his Night at the Roxsbury head bob. Tony couldn't be counted out though as he was able to show ant-like strength by hitting moves like an arm drag and a monkey flip despite the 70-lbs. weight difference. Matt's first instinct to come back was with his fists, but chose the higher path and wrestled his way back with a bodyslam and a butterfly suplex. Knowing this match wasn't as easy as planned, Longtime started to go for pins after every move and continued to ground his smaller opponent. Rican hung on just long enough and was able to pin his worn out opponent at the 7:37 mark with a 2nd rope moonsault.
Match 2: "One Sexy Mofo" Bryce Benjamin vs. "Presented in HD" Rasche Brown, qualifying match.
Similar dynamic as the previous match of size vs. speed. There were more laughs in this one as they played a cat and mouse game, with Bryce trying to avoid the awesome power of Rasche. Brown was able to catch Benjamin in an airplane spin suplex. Bryce went to the eyes to allow himself to escape under the ring. When Benjamin returned to the ring, Rasche appeared to have flattened him with a monsterous spear, but both men were laid out. Bryce then pinned the big man at the 4:32 mark. The victorious one then revealed to have slipped a metal sheet under his shirt during his time under the ring.
Afterward, Tony Scarpone hit the ring to lay a savage beating to the already fallen Rasche Brown.

A video filmed earlier in the day showed Ryan Slade trying to convince Petey Williams that he was in fact Canadian and that they actually knew each from back in the day and used to go fishing together. Petey challenged Ryan by asking him questions every true Canadian would know and Slade didn't have any of the answers. Slade then challenged Williams to a match. Williams added that if the Canadian Sex Icon won, Petey would acknowledge that he knew Slade and they have indeed hung out in the past. However, if Maple Leaf Muscle won, Slade would never bother Williams again.

A second video showed Ginger McNabb interviewing Eric Tradition, Bryce Benjamin and Mason Conrad as they arrived to the building. McNabb said it was announced on the Underground website that Tradition would be banned from ringside for Conrad's main event dog collar match with Calypso. Eric quipped that he wouldn't need to be present to have his presence felt. The three interviewees went their separate ways as the camera followed Tradition where he found Zach Thompson and wanted his answer on if he would join his group. Thompson said no and grabbed Eric by the tie, shoving him down into a nearby bathroom.
Match 3: Zach Thompson vs. Gilbert Lewis, qualifying match.
Two fan favorites faced off in the 3rd qualifying match for the Underground Championship Tournament. They went back and forth at first with neither man able to get ahead on the other. The crowd seemed to really like the exchange and the mutual show of respect. Gilbert looked to pull away with the match after taking Thompson around the horn, ramming him head first into each turnbuckle, followed by folding him over with a second rope clothesline. Zach found some adreneline and shoved Lewis to the outside and hit a spot on top rope plancha. The Belfast, Nothern Iowa native kept the flurry of offense going by countering a wheelbarrow attempt with an armdrag, followed by a frankensteiner, dropkick and northern light suplex for 2. Gilbert tried hitting his Twist of Fate-like finisher out of desparation but Zach did his homework and pushed Lewis off. The veteren in the match outwitted his younger opponent, however; as Gilbert floated over a back body drop attempt into his finisher for the 3-count at the 7:13 mark.
Match 4: Void Effect vs. Brandon Blaze
Blaze was introduced to the crowd as "representing American History Next." AM Vishion interupted, wondering where Hardcore Craig and Steve Stone were since they beat him in a 2-on-1 match last show after they attacked Zero in the parking lot. Brandon claimed they were taking a well deserved vacation, but AM begged to differ, suggesting they weren't there "by design." Vishion wanted Blaze in a 2-on-1 match later in the show. As Blaze backed his way down the isle, he bumped into an awaiting Zero, who promptly began putting the fists to Blaze. AM excitedly told Blaze "it's later" so the match was on right then and there. The Voids went to work on Brandon, hitting some of their trademark tandem moves. Blaze bought himself a break by grabbing AM's tights and yanking him through the ropes to the outside. Back in the ring, Brandon kept Vishion from tagging out to his partner, often times goading Zero into entering the ring, forcing the referee to keep Zero out, allowing Blaze to use illegal tactics like a low blow donkey kick. Another good move by Blaze was taking Vishion's arm and extending it to Zero for the tag, but when Zero attempted to tag in, Brandon was in position to Russian leg sweep AM away from his corner. Vishion managed to avoid being back body dropped and hit a clothesline, allowing himself to tag out. Zero came in a house of fire with a jumping knee smash and a huge powerslam. AM appeared to be exausted, but Zero called for the continuation of double team moves, capped off with the Joliet native coming down with a top rope knee smash onto Blaze, whom Zero had hoisted into a fireman's carry. Zero finished the sequence with a death valley bomb for the 3-count at the 4:53 mark.
Match 5: "Canadian Sex Icon" Ryan Slade vs. "Maple Leaf Muscle" Petey Williams.
To the surprise of no one, Williams was able to out quick and out maneauver Slade in the opening minutes of the match. Petey took Slade to ringside and held him so audience members could get their licks in. Williams went to suplex Slade back into the ring, but Ryan held on to the bottom rope to avoid being lifted, then pulled Petey's neck down over the top rope to gain the upper hand. Some "USA" chants could be heard shortly after this, despite there being two Canadians in the ring. Williams does reside in Michigan, to his credit. The Canadian Sex Icon grounded Maple Leaf Muscle with a head scissors, using the ropes for extra leaverage. Petey was able to battle back from a sleeper and hit a swinging neck breaker. After an enziguri and hesitation drop kick, Petey called for the Canadian Destroyer, which the crowd really came alive for. Slade was able to counter the first attempt with a hangman's neckbreaker for a 2-count. A second attempt at the move resulted in Ryan dropping Williams with a double leg take down and getting him in the sharpshooter, then he switched to a Canadian crossface, neither of which the crowd was happy about. Petey was able to slide his way out of the crossface, then moved out of the way from a top rope splash. Williams tried a third time for the flipping piledriver, but Slade back dropped him over to avoid it again, this time sitting down on Petey and hooking the legs for a very close 2-count. The fourth attempt was too much though as Petey hit his amazing Canadian Destroyer for the pinfall at the 10:39 mark. Slade showed a lot of ring savvy by avoiding the piledriver three consecutive times and showed he was able to hang with a former 2-time X-Division champion, despite falling in defeat.
Match 6: Ashton Vuitton vs. Joey Marx.
Despite being very young and fairly new to the business, these two were getting solid reactions from the crowd--heavy jeers for Vuitton and heavy cheers for Marx. The action early on was very tight and smooth, with Ashton getting astonishing height on a leapfrog where he nearly did a full split. Joey took the spotlight though with armdrags and a beautiful step over toe kick. Vuitton took control by grabbing Marx in a wheelbarrow and dropping his throat across the top rope before slamming him face first to the mat. Vuitton added insult to injury by treating Marx's back as a catwalk, strutting over his prone body before striking a pose to the disapproving audience. Joey fought back from a camel clutch, but Ashton cut him off with a knee to the gut. Marx ran at Ashton, who pulled down the top rope to low bridge his charging opponent, but Joey landed feet first on the apron and springboarded back into the ring with a flying dropkick. Marx kept the offense going with forearms and a t-bone suplex despite his size. Ashton bounced back by catching Joey on a leapfrog on his shoulders into a fireman's carry into a steamroller for a 2-count, causing Vuitton to throw a little tantrem out of frustration. He tried to calm himself down by taking a look at himself in the mirror he brought to the ring, but it would be his undoing as Marx was able to hit a top rope Moonlight Drive-like move for the cover at the 7:52 mark.
Tokyo Twins Video:
Former Underground referee Nicholas H announced he was the Twins' new manager. The twosome referred to Nick as the best manager in all of Asia and the world. Nicholas talked about himself as the Twins worked out in the ring behind him. H offered up such sagely advise as "keep working out."
Match 7: Tokyo Twins vs. Monster Ballad.
Before the match, Mi of the Tokyos showed his toughness by having Yu crack him in the back with such painful weapons as an empty water bottle and a plastic shirt hanger. The next weapon was a badminton racket, but instead of hitting his partner with the webbing, Yu caught Mi with the metal edge. When the next weapon turned out to be a baseball bat, Mi decided the demonstration was over. In the opening stages of the match, the Monsters had the Twins on the outside set up for a dive. Johnny went to vault Tommy over the top rope, but the Tokyos tripped him up, causing Tommy to get clotheslined on the top rope. The Twins, with a little help from their new manager, kept Tommy in their corner. The Twins kept control of the match, with Yu bodyslamming Mi onto Tommy and Mi hitting a nice back drop driver, both for 2-counts. Yu looked like he twisted his knee after missing a step over toe kick, but he was able to tag out to avoid further damage. Tommy took advantage of the situation by hitting a spin kick and made the tag to Johnny. Johnny cleaned house and Tommy quickly joined the party, hitting a double 10-count punch in opposite corners and the Guitar Hero double elbow drop. The Motleys ascended the same turnbuckle, but Nicholas H got involved by throwing them off, forcing referee Mr. Cervantes to call for the diqualification at the 8:43 mark. Mi siezed the opportunity to hit a crushing brainbuster on Johnny and an original diamond cutter (both giver and receiver goes head first) on Tommy.
Smallzz address crowd/Scarpone:
JC Smallz came out and announced Tony Scarpone was very angry and throwing chairs around in the back, and wanted him to come out and address the issue. Tony came out and said he's the biggest guy in Underground, yet he's not in a qualifying match for the championship tournament. The crowd cheered him when he said he was in the back drinking beer, but then he turned it around on the audience, calling them a bunch of drunks to a chorus of boos. Smallz confessed he didn't give Scarpone a qualifying match because the crowd didn't like him, but he had a change of heart since Tony's had a tough last couple months, what with taking on Rasche Brown and Corporal Robinson. Scarps got tired of the crowd's booing and said he was going to go back to his lovely home in Berwyn. Smallz then gave Tony the option of picking his opponent in a qualifying match for the championship tournament. Scarpone teased he would face a kid or sexy young lady from the crowd, but Smallz said it had to be someone on the Underground roster. Scarpone said he would love to beat up Rasche Brown, but then chose color commentator Bob Gomez. Gomez clearly wanted no part in this match but Smallz said they didn't have a choice and wished Bob a rather insincere "good luck." Although Scarpone gave Gomez a free punch, he made short work of the commentator, with the ref mercifully calling for the bell after two "Fuhgetaboutit" powerbombs at the 0:54 mark. Tony went for the third powerbomb, but Rasche Brown hit the ring to break it up. Tony escaped through the crowd as Brown told Tony he could run, but Rasche would keep coming back and when he gets his hands on Tony, the beating would be presented in HD!
Main Event: "The Old School All-Star" Mason Conrad vs. "The Unpredictable" Calypso, dog collar match
Mason suprisingly didn't put up a fight with the referee when it came time to put on the collar, but once the bell rang, he threw the collar off and powdered out to the outside. Conrad tried to bait Calypso into missing his offense, but he couldn't get a safe distance from his opponent because of the chain. The Dark Horse Assylum native used the chain to his advantage, yanking Mason around, clotheslining and choking him with the chain. Old School came back during a tug-of-war when he hit a clothesline of his own, using the momentum to his favor. Calypso tried to turn the tide with a charge, but ended up over the top rope into a hangman, followed by a suplex back into the ring. The in-ring action didn't last long as the Unpredictable one clotheslined Conrad over the top and procured a hangman of his own. Conrad tried trumping his opponent by heading to the top rope, but Calypso was on top of it and pulled Mason down using the chain, causing Conrad to front flip and land hard in the middle of the ring. Old School was then whipped to the buckle and the velocity caused him to backflip over the corner and crash head first into the railing. Calypso then capitalized with a top rope plancha, chain and all! He stayed on him by blasting Mason with the chain and throwing him into the post, busting Conrad open across the forehead. Calypso wrapped Old School in the chain with his arms trapped around the post. Conrad got loose, only to have his blood licked up off his forehead. Mason's attempts to wrap the chain around Calypso's neck were thwarted, but he did manage to hit a diamond cutter. Bryce Benjamin then hit the ring, took the collar off Mason and began going to work on Calypso. Zach Thompson made the save, set up Mason in a corner, then got down on all fours so Calypso could use his back as a springboard to slam into his opponent. Instead, as Calypso sprinted, he was met in the face with a steel chair. Zach's chair throw to the Unpredictable one's face was mean, nasty, brutal and came completely out of nowhere. Mason easily got the pin at the 13:40 mark. Security and AM Vishion came out to help the referee check on Calypso, who needed to be carried to the back. For the first time in Underground, Calypso had been laid out and left. Zach Thompson, despite telling Eric Tradition no earlier in the day, had joined up with Tradition, Conrad and Benjamin.
