prince of the deathmatches was a great sign of things to come for the up and coming stars of IWA-MS as well as what's to come in KOTDM. these guys busted their asses and put on one hell of an effort throughout.
round one matches:
opening match saw markus crane defeat dixieland destroyer in a barbed wire madness match. despite not usually being a fan favorite, and the fact that dixieland is a huge dude, markus was the favorite to win for the crowd. markus got a very good reaction from the crowd. the finish was great as he gave dixie a frankensteiner off the top rope through a barbed wire board, then put two more on top of him and hit a swanton bomb for the win.
up next, neil diamond cutter took on a very drunk jon moxley in the first ever curt hennig drunken taipei deathmatch. it was hilarious. during moxley's entrance, he demanded his music be shut off so that he could hear neil's "sweet caroline" entrance music again and proceeded to sing it with the crowd. funny stuff. not a sick match by any means, but lots of comedy. any time moxley took a shot, neil would throw his out of the ring and not take the shot. in the end, moxley gave neil an airplane spin and passed out mid way allowing neil to get the victory.
ron mathis beat brian gott in a barbed wire bullrope match. this was pretty fun. i'm not all too familiar with either of these guys, but they went all out. the cowbell shots were nasty. mathis beat gott after a top rope falcon arrow on to the barbed wire. very sick looking.
simon sezz who apparently is a relic of IWA's past made a losing effort in his return against kyle threat in a barefoot thumbtacks and lighttubes match which was just sick. simon's shrieks of pain were traumatizing. i hate watching barefoot matches because they make MY feet hurt, but simon had a very good showing against the former xOMGx.
non tournament matches:
ryan phoenix retained the light heavyweight title against jc bailey in a pretty good match. not sure if jc is going to be a regular after this weekend of shows. the crowd kind of turned on phoenix at the end and chanted "b*llsh*t" and asked for five more minutes. we didn't get it though, and phoenix walked out with the belt. after the match, ian talked about his history with bailey and told him what he was in for at april bloodshowers the following night in litchfield.
matt cage and the hooligans defeated ian rotten, sal thomaselli and dan the man in a very long, but fun, 6 man tag team match. this wasn't a brawl, but had some good comedy and action throughout. dan is a trooper for taking some of the things he did. ultimately, sal cleaned house on the hooligans and seemed poised to win the match. but dan got the tag and wound up on the receiving end from a rolling elbow from cage which led into the wheelbarrel ddt move from the hooligans to pick up the win.
after the match, the hooligans and cage duct taped sal to the ropes and then the hooligans stuck syringe needles all throughout ian's face and even in his tongue. jc bailey then made the save and chased the three off. ian got the mic and warned the hooligans that they were in for some serious revenge and made the match for 4/30 in bellevue; necro butcher and ian rotten vs. the hooligans and told matt cage he wasn't getting off easy either. very powerful segment.
sabu defeated drake younger in possibly the match of the night. it was absolutely sick. so many things that you just wouldn't expect. drake was absolutely pouring blood all over the place. it was the epitome of a crimson mask. chairs were used and broken, but sabu pulled through and submitted drake with the camel clutch. the crowd gave the two men a great ovation for their efforts. sabu stabbed drake repeatedly stabbed drake in the head with something which brought out a few members of the roster to try and make the save, but to no avail as sabu chased THEM off to a huge ovation. following all this though, drake got the mic and told sabu that he was NOT scared of him and wanted him in the ring one more time at KOTDM and demanded that ian make the match, which he did. amazing match and moment.
round two matches:
these guys returned after the non tournament matches and they were obviously amped up to get things going.
neil diamond cutter defeated kyle threat in an unlucky 13 fish hooks match. apparently, neil is the master of the "unlucky 13" gimmick, having defeated matt cage a few weeks back and kyle threat tonight. neil busted out his tumbleweed in the bleachers again which got a good pop from the crowd. these crazy asses had fish hooks hanging out of their foreheads. they even ripped them out of each other. neil won after kyle went for the michinoku driver, but neil slid out and stabbed him in the shoulder. sick stuff.
markus crane beat ron mathis in a caribbean spiderweb match which was just nasty. there were no ropes in this one, only barbed wire ropes. so at the very beginning of the match, markus shotgun dropkicked mathis into the barbed wire and he just hung there by his flesh. gruesome, greusome scene. there was some sick stuff in this match and they went all out. mathis returned the sickening favor by flapjacking markus into a pit of barbedwire which was nasty, crane became tangled. but the conclusion was one of the best of the night as crane pinned mathis after delivering his ghanarhea (think jimmy rave, if you haven't seen it) finisher through a pit of barbed wire, lighttubes. awesome match.
finals:
neil diamond cutter defeated markus crane in an no rope, barbed wire ultimate x match. just sick. just sick. the x at the top rope the ring was also barbed wire and had the contract for KOTDM entry in it. these guys beat the hell out of each other with thumbtack bats, maimed each other with barbed wire and neil killed markus with a sick backdrop driver of sorts. these guys gave it their all in a great final match for the show. but it was all outshined by the final spot of the match as they ascended a ladder and crane superplexed neil off the top of the ladder, through the barbed wire x and collapsed and destroyed the whole set. amazing spot. they came to their knees, exchanged forearms and ultimately neil grabbed the contract to win the whole thing.
afterwards, the hooligans came out, seemingly to congratulate their brother but then slapped him in a fit of jealousy. neil had enough and finally turned on his brothers, fighting back with everything in his power until they ran away to the back. the crowd chanted "IWA" and "thank you neil" and ian congratulated neil and told him that he's not getting out of ring duty.
amazing show, and if you were not in the building, you missed out. these youngsters gave it their all. markus crane definitely shined in this tournament and he was really over. ron mathis had a good showing as well. i'm not familiar with him, but i enjoyed his match with gott. moxley was moxley, and though it wasn't a sick match, he was entertaining. people need to come out and support what IWA is providing right now. come to the shows. and if you weren't there, definitely buy this dvd as well as the next night at april bloodshowers. this was a great show and kickstart of a great weekend of IWA.
