IPW (Impact Pro Wrestling) with promoter Troy Peterson held a great show in Waterloo, Iowa at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. This was part of the Hall-of-Fame weekend that was going on for the Dan Gable Wrestling Museum. On Friday, July 9th, IPW put on an indy show with a couple of ROH stars. Before the show, there was a Q & A session with Mick Foley and Terry Funk followed by a 90-minute fanfest with wrestling legends and other sports athletes and character actor Michael Talbott (First Blood). The next day was the ceremony at the museum. The whole weekend was a blast for any true wrestling fan. Troy Peterson gave me the honor of posting the results to the IPW show.
* Before posting the results, I want to thank IPW rookie Blu Diamond Phillips for his input. He sat next to me in the front row and gave me info and background on the IPW stars and current feuds.
1. James Jefferies vs Sparrow
These two had a very long feud going on in IPW. The crowd seemed into it as the match was mostly technical wrestling. It was an even back-n-forth match until Jefferies used the ropes to score the pin-fall.
Winner: James Jefferies
2. The IPW Tag Team Champions Justin Decent and Ugly vs Montoya X and Marshall Scott
This match was full of comedy at times and serious at other moments. The fans did seem to love it. At times this match did get a little too goofy but these guys were all good workers. Justin Decent looked so much like Al Snow from his Job Squad days. Ugly was an amusing character who carried his big "ugly"stick to the ring. Montoya X was built like Kevin Steen from ROH. Montoya could do some impressive moves for a big guy. Marshall Scott was the most impressive worker in the match. He hit some good ariel moves and got over well as a heel.
Montoya X delivered a great clothesline to Ugly late in the match. Ugly accidentally hits his partner Justin Decent. Decent then put his partner Ugly into an airplane spin twirling around and knocking down both of their opponents. The finish was nice. Decent placed Scott in an airplane spin position which set up a dropkick by Ugly. Decent fell backwards on Scott and earned the pin.
Winners: Justin Decent and Ugly
3. Tyler Black(ROH Champion) vs AJ Smooth
AJ Smooth billed himself as the "Pride of Canada". Smooth reminded me of the days when Scott D'Amore ran Team Canada in TNA. Smooth was a good worker who did his best to keep up with Tyler Black. The ROH Champion dominated most of the match with Smooth getting in his fair shots. Black's classic tossing his opponent backwards into the turn buckle and delivering a super-kick ended the contest.
Winner: Tyler Black
******************20-Minute Intermission****************
4. Anthony"Playboy"Draven vs Harley Jackson
This was a bonus match not listed on the line-up sheet. A DJ from the local Waterloo radio station announced that he's bringing in a new prospect. Draven came in playing the Playboy Buddy Rose gimmick. Reminded me of Jason Dukes. Draven referred to himself as the underwear model. He made a challenge to anyone in the back for a match. Big Harley Jackson accepted the offer to destroy Draven with only a headbutt and a chokeslam. It was the quickest victory in IPW history. Jackson was a very likable character.
Winner: Harley Jackson
5. IPW Heavy Weight Champion Tony Sly vs Matty Star
Champion Tony Sly was a tall, bald guy a good heel look to him against a highflyer named Matty Star. Star was impressive early on nailing Sly with a dropkick off the second rope. Sly's pimp-looking manager would get involved at times ruining the momentum for Star. This match also had good technical skills with some high flying action. The challenger missed a huge lionsault that would have been crucial. The champion distracted the referee long enough to allow his manager to nail the challenger with the title belt. The set up at the end was a little too long but otherwise a very good match.
Winner: Tony Sly
6. ROH star Austin Aries vs Nicky Free
This was an outstanding match! The match of the evening. It was one of those matches that made you proud to be a wrestling fan. The crowd was into it. Nicky Free is one of IPW's top stars and possibly future champion. I had the honor of doing a sit down interview with him before the show. The interview will air at a later time.
The two-time former ROH Champion took the mic to belittle the Iowa fans and his opponent. Free started the match with a series of headlocks and shoulder blocks. The IPW star nailed Aries with a fall-away-slam.....aka....Scott Hall. The match spilled to the floor where Free headbutted Aries into a 16-oz can of Miller Light held up by a fan. That move received a huge pop. The forehead of Aries was open up cause of that move. Austin Aries would regain his form and nail Free off the ropes on the outside floor right in front of me. The action went back in the ring with Aries delivering a hard kick to the chest. Nicky would score a over-head suplex almost landing Aries on his head. The match continued to keep going with fans glued at ringside. A huge brain buster by Free almost won the contest but the true champion that Aries is managed to get a kick out. The huge upset happened when Nicky Free nailed Aries with a form of the Rock Bottom. I was on my feet clapping for both men.
Winner: Nicky Free
7. Main Event: 20-Man Over The Top Battle Royal
A Battle Royal is always a fun way to end the evening. Austin Aries entered himself in the match along with the rest of the IPW locker room. The winner would receive $5,000 and a future shot at the IPW Championship. An enjoyable match for us fans.
Winner: Matty Star
This was a fun show with a good crowd between 200-300 enjoying the action. Too bad IPW is mostly in Iowa. I wouldn't mind catching a future show. Congrats to Troy Peterson and all the IPW talent along with the ROH stars for pulling off a great show as part of the HOF weekend.
In the upcoming weeks, I will post:
-Highlights from the Funk/Foley Q&A Session
-My interview with IPW star Nicky Free
-My interview with two soon-to-be trainees named Overman & Tony Riot.
-Thoughts from the fanfest and HOF ceremony.
