North American Pro Wrestling (NAPW) made its successful debut last Sunday afternoon in Aurora, IL. This new company is founded by wrestler/promoter Joey Rose. The selected venue was America's Roundhouse (formerly Walter Payton's Roundhouse). The restaurant is two clicks away from the casino. One could enjoy a good meal, sample home-brewed beer & enjoy an entertaining afternoon of wrestling.
A nice surprise was having Joey Eastman as our colorful ring announcer. The lovely Cookie Lady was also in attendance. Glad to see she was doing well. Former TNA Superstar Sharkboy was signing autographs and taking photos prior to the 2pm bell time. My twin six-year old nephews were so excited in meeting Sharkboy.
1. Jay (Jayson) Kross vs Texas Pete
The opening contest saw former CLPW Tag Team Champions go into action. Texas Pete, who was unhappy with the crowd, was looking for a good dance partner so he asked his opponent. Kross said no to dancing but yes to a body slam. The former partners didn't hold back as they gave an entertaining opening contest. Jay would put his opponent up for the airplane spin and finally a thunderous power-slam to end the bout.
Winner: Jay Kross
2. Tony Scarpone & Mike Horning vs Tony Rican & Bucky Collins
This was one of the better matches of the afternoon. Arm bars and wrist locks were used early on as fans were treated to good mat action. The crowd would get treated to high flying and double-team action by Collins & Rican. Bucky Collins is an exciting young man to watch in the ring. The tide would turn when Horning would catch Collins with a great Jumping Jim Brunzell type dropkick.
An impressive spot came late in the match when the powerful Tony Scarpone would haul Collins up in the suplex position. Scarpone would twice bounce Collins off each section of the four sections of the ropes before crashing down on the mat. That move earned Scarpone a $1 bill from ring announcer Eastman. Scarpone's size was too much when he knocked Rican off the canvas and power bombed Collins. Horning made the cover.
Winners: Mike Horning & Tony Scarpone.
3. "The Strangler" Diego Corleone & "The Dodge Ball Superstar" Tyler Priegel vs Joey Rose & Chad Falcon.
This match wasn't too bad. The crowd showed its heat towards the heel veteran team of Priegel & Corleone. I had never seen the young team of Rose & Falcon before but they showed a lot of energy and heart. The match was very physical early on with the veterans controlling a good portion of the action. Joey Rose would catch "The Dodge Ball Superstar" off-guard with a hard slap to the face followed by a version of the Alabama slam. Chad Falcon would soar off the ropes onto the fallen Priegel for the pinfall victory.
Winners: Joey Rose & Chad Falcon
4. Sebastion Reese vs Max Bauer
This was a battle of two big men. Reese would use the old Playboy Buddy Rose gimmick and announce himself as 218 pounds. The famous Cookie Lady would lead the crowd of "Chunky Monkey" against Reese. The crowd was very vocal during this match.
Reese would catch Bauer early on with a hard clothesline. Bauer would lose a lot of his wind due to a Reese bear hug but would hang in the match. Bauer finally got in some offense only to miss with his big boot and get caught in a body press. Reese took charge of most of the match until he made his fatal mistake of going to the top rope and jawing with the crowd. Bauer launched his opponent off the ropes, nailed his big boot and scored the big win.
Winner: Max Bauer
5. The Main Event: Brandon Blaze vs Former TNA Superstar Sharkboy
Sharkboy drew a huge pop from the crowd as he made his entrance to the ring. He still uses his colorful Stone Cold gimmick. It was a very entertaining match and the crowd really seem to have enjoyed it. Sharkboy would end the match with an impressive running bulldog and then the "Stunner".
Winner: Sharkboy
The show was under two hours due to some scheduled talent not appearing and another event schedule later on in the evening. NAPW gave a very good effort for its first time. Most of the crowd seemed happy with the show.
NAPW has two more shows scheduled at America's Roundhouse for May 15th and June 19th. Sharkboy will return for those two shows. Please check the Upcoming Show Section of CPW for more information on these two shows. Sharkboy also agreed to a six question interview via e-mail with yours truly. I hope to get that posted within a couple of weeks. Best of luck to NAPW.
