In front of a packed house at the WCWO Arena in Indianapolis, Billy Roc’s School of Roc presented its 2011 Winter Showcase event, where three brand new students made their in-ring debuts and an 18-year-old kid became a man and scored arguably the biggest win of his entire career in a moment that has to be seen to be believed.
1) THE KENTUCKY BUFFET (Alex Castle & Matt Cage) defeated THE BITTER LUNATICS (Reed Bentley & Christian Rose). In the only bout of the night consisting entirely of non-School of Roc graduates, both teams showed how bright the future is for Midwestern independent wrestling beyond Indiana. Both teams showed some dynamic, state-of-the-art double-team tricks and maneuvers, but the Buffet ended up pinning their cohort in Team Overkill (Rose) after a Saito suplex/superkick combination move.
2) “Bulletproof” TRIPP CASSIDY won a four-man gauntlet match also featuring “Ruthless” JAMES REEVES, HOLLYWOOD DREAM and “Big” SUE JACKSON. Immediately after the previous tag team match, the goliath Sue Jackson laid out both members of the Kentucky Buffet single-handedly and demanded that the gauntlet match started right then, as opposed to later in the evening as planned. Jackson faced James Reeves first and quickly finished him with his Close Shave (reverse full-nelson slam). Hollywood Dream drew number three in the line-up. Despite being able to match Sue in terms of power and having an absolute war with Jackson in a strike exchange, he fell short after trying a springboard flying press to knock down the 366-pound madman and being caught with another Close Shave. Finally, the teenage underdog Tripp Cassidy came into the bout. Tripp pulled out all of the heart and passion in his being and, after being the only person to knock down Jackson all night, he caught Jackson off-guard with a schoolboy to earn the right to face his trainer, Billy Roc, in the main event.
3) “Sexy” SHAWN COOK defeated “The Phoenix” DALE PATRICKS. In the first of three School of Roc Rookie Challenge matches, Dale Patricks showed the poise of a wrestler beyond his years, but came up just short against one of the craftiest veterans wrestling in the Midwest right now. Patricks was able to catch Cook off-guard with a couple of high-impact moves, but in the end, Cook’s experience was too much.
4) GUY LOMBARDO defeated “The Master of War” LOGAN WILLIAMS. Going into the bout, Williams had perfected his form of the Fujiwara Armbar that most thought would be his key to the upset. Williams tried his hardest to get the submission victory, including working over Lombardo’s left arm throughout the entire bout and even scoring a tremendous version of Sin Cara’s “La Mistica” (flying headscissors into the Fujiwara armbar), but like the previous match, Lombardo’s experience overcame Williams’ determination for the tapout. After the bout, Lombardo showed respect to Williams for bringing the fight in his debut match and they shook hands.
5) ROB RAMER d. “The Omega” NATE STONE. In the battle of the big men, Stone turned a lot of heads by showing shocking agility and almost pulling out a win in his debut match with some innovative moves that Ramer didn’t see coming (including a leaping knee to Ramer’s head as Ramer was seated and a Vader Bomb turned into a back senton that wow’ed the audience), but Ramer was able to keep Stone in one spot, grind him down and get the victory. Like the other two 2011 School of Roc graduates on this card, he put up one heck of a fight for his debut performance.
6) “Bulletproof” TRIPP CASSIDY defeated “The King of Indiana” BILLY ROC in 28:46. Both competitors brought some fancy matwork and maneuvers during the first ten minutes of this bout, including Roc breaking out some fast-paced lucha libre-style techniques (such as an awe-inspiring Mascara Dorada-style top rope armdrag). This was after some back-and-forth taunting, including Roc insinuating that 2010 graduate Remi Wilkins was the top School of Roc student and not Cassidy, and Cassidy responding by calling Roc an “old man”. Cassidy tried a high-risk dive to the floor and hurt his knee on the landing, leading to Roc taking advantage of the injury and working over the leg. Over twenty minutes into the bout, Sue Jackson came to the ringside area, looking as mean as ever, but pleasantly surprised those in attendance by cheering both his trainer and his fellow School of Roc student. This was followed by Guy Lombardo leading out the rest of the locker room to surround the ring and cheer both competitors on as they were nearing the time limit. Late in the bout, both Cassidy and Roc scored big near-falls, with Cassidy coming VERY close to tapping out Roc with a cross armbreaker at the 25-minute mark. In the end, Cassidy shocked the Midwestern wrestling scene by hitting his Go 2 Hell (fireman’s carry into a Codebreaker) in under two minutes before the 30-minute time limit was to expire and cleanly defeated the man who brought him into the sport.
After the bout, Roc shook Cassidy’s hand and gracefully bowed out of the ring as Cassidy soaked in the cheers of a standing ovation from both his peers and the audience who filled the building to see the event.
