So its a few days late for this, but I just managed to get some free time, and wanted to talk about my first ever experience with IWA Mid West. This is a first time posting a review of any show, but long time reader. I noticed a lot of hatred towards the company, so I just wanted to shed some light for everyone.
The date was 5/19/12 Misery in May taking place in Bellevue, IL. Turn out was around 60 people, and boy were they into the show all night long.
Opening contest was a singles match featuring Adam Bueller and Johnny Wisdom, with Bueller sealing a win with a very nice double knee drop from the top. A very nice opener if I might add. Great way to start off a show, would like to see these two go at it again. (3/5 rating)
2nd match was a tag team match featuring The Hooligans vs. "Hollywood Dream" Trevor Court and Kurt Styles. Always a huge fan of good tag team wrestling, and this match for sure satisfied me to my liking. The Hooligans are just plain nasty, nasty brawlers. At the end of the match, they continued the beat down, only to be shooed away by Drake Younger. (3/5)
3rd match featured 3 gentlemen by the names of Chase Matthews, Sea Man, and Jeffery Dark taking on the big monster Konga Kong. First off, let me just say this. Konga Kong, for being a big as he is, is pretty agile. The 3 men showed some sort of offense, Sea Man had some fire in him, but was eventually extinguished. Kong chokeslammed Sea Man, and finished him off with a splash from the top for the win. After the match, Kong grabbed Matthews, and delivered a MONSTROUS chokeslam. I'm betting Chase was at least 10 feet in the air. Followed up with yet another splash from the top. Dark was next for his turn with a chokeslam, and when Kong went to the top for another splash, he was informed that if he connected with this one, he was to be suspended. And with that being said, Kong delivered yet another flattening splash, therefore being suspended on the spot. (3/5 rating)
Match #4 was easily the best match of the night featuring "The Serial Killer" Jack Thriller and the CZW Junior Heavyweight Champion Drake Younger. Solid back and forth match. Spilling out to the crowd, chops heard around the world, headbutts that would knock a normal man out, a powerbomb to the apron, and just down right great wrestling. If the fans felt that they didn't get their money's worth with the first 3 matches, this one definitely made it happen. I was very pleased with this match, and I'm sure the rest of the fans would agree with me. Jack Thriller was victorious via knockout when Drake passed out due to the figure four leg lock, but the decision was quickly reversed when Thriller refused to release the figure four. After the match ended, The Hooligans ran out to give Younger a receipt for getting involved with their business earlier in the night. (5/5 rating hands down)
Match #5 - Joey Grunge and Bucky Collins with Thunderkitty vs. Oliver Cain and Ian Rotten with Serenity. Bucky took a beating. Grunge wasn't in the match a whole lot, which left both Cain and Rotten giving Collins a huge beat down. Bucky didn't seem to quit though, occasionally firing back in spurts, only to be quickly knocked back down again. Ian Rotten quickly surprised me with his in ring abilities after hearing a few bad remarks from people on the internet. My hat is off to his ring work. Ian hit Collins with a DDT, and before he could make the pin, Matt Tremont came out and pulled Rotten off of Collins. This started a brawl between Tremont and Rotten, which set up the main event. Also during this brawl, the ladies began to have a brawl that spilled into the bleachers. This lead to the back clearing out trying to pull this two ladies apart, and boy did they have their work cut out for them. In the midst of all the brawling going on, Collins managed to defeat Cain in the middle of the ring. (2/5 rating)
Intermission was easily 25-30 min long, due to the fact that the ring ropes were removed for the barbed wire to be set up. This wait felt like an eternity. Not sure if everyone was on the same page with setting it up.
Match #6 - The Main Event - Barbed Wire Ropes match with Ian Rotten vs Matt Tremont. This match was just down right ugly. Blood, Barbed Wire, and Fire. A lot of emotions were expressed during the match, and you could definitely tell both competitors gave it everything they had in that ring. Fans were behind it from bell to bell, and I was really happy to see Ian bring back the ol fireball to ensure victory over Tremont. (4/5 rating)
6 matches is a rather small card for most indy shows, but I am pleased to say that I attended this event. Well worth the money spent, and the time it took to drive. Overall I give this show a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. Next show is June 16th featuring a ton of talent. Sounds like another good show is in the making.
