FCW (Frontier Championship Wrestling) sizzled the already sweltering summer with its annual classic WrestleRock 4. It was held last Saturday, July 7Th at the Rock Hollow Conservation Club in Freeport, IL. This event is normally an outdoor show but with the boiling heat index, it was a last minute decision to hold the event indoors. The bar/club isn't a huge building. One of my friends speculated about 150 fans or more. The bar had very good specials on both drink and food. A pulled pork sandwich and FF were $5 while a corn dog and FF were $4. Great to see "The Cookie Lady" and her hubby Jim at ringside. Great people.
Sean Collier was the master of ceremonies who introduced FCW owner the honorable Richard Bonjour. Rocky James is the FCW commissioner. Fans paid $10 in advance or $12 at the door. It was a fun evening of wrestling. AWA Legends "The Thumper" Frankie DeFalco and Jake "The Milkman" Milliman greeted fans before the show and during intermission.
1. Scotty Keyes vs Jack Carpenter
The two young men opened the bout with a series of wristlocks, headlocks and a few hip tosses. The match took a turn to the floor with Carpenter delivering some chest chops. Keyes returned to the ring to catch his opponent with a spinning leg kick. Keyes was controlling most of the second half. A crucial error came when Scotty missed a leg drop off the ropes. Carpenter used a stomach breaker on his knees to score the "W". A good opening contest and good outing for both guys.
Winner: Jack Carpenter
2. KC Hofmaster vs "The Dodgeball Superstar" Tyler Priegel vs Coach Havens
This was a triple threat match with Priegel serving as the soul heel. His two baby-faced opponents quickly double-teamed him early on. Priegel received a double corner splash and was beamed with his own dodgeballs. Havens and Hofmaster eventually turned on each other. The coach was tossed outside the ring a few times keeping him out of action. The match really picked up as the crowd got into the bout. Priegel belly-to-bellied Havens with a thundering suplex. KC nailed Priegel with a super-kick and then the Coach speared Priegel. KC broke up the attempted pin attempt. "The Dodgeball Superstar" obtained victory with a roll-up and handful of tights. Another good match.
Winners: "The Dodgeball Superstar" Tyler Priegel
3. Jessie Belle vs "Serenity" Allison Bree
A big shout out by the fans as the ladies took the stage. Serenity exploded with a series of fast arm drags. Jessie Belle delivered a sweet spinning neck breaker. Serenity almost pulled off an early victory with a roll-up as her opponent missed a corner splash. The two women received crowd approval for their back-n-forth effort. Jessie Belle stunned Serenity with a Widow's Peek. The ending came when Serenity hit a Samoan drop-type maneuver knocking the wind out of Jessie Belle.
Winner: "Serenity" Allison Bree
4. Joey "Bam Bam" Hegland & Nathan Knox (The Dudesons) and The Priest vs "The Thumper" Frankie DeFalco, Jake "The Milkman" Milliman and Moondog Bernard
The crowd gave a nice pop for the trio of DeFalco, Milliman & Bernard. DeFalco and Milliman both worked the AWA and WWE during the 80s. An awesome treat to meet both men.
"The Thumper" was able to out-muscle the members of the young tag-team known as the Dudesons. The crazy Moondog bite his way around the ring while delivering chops. Another huge pop as "The Milkman" entered. His luck ran short as the Priest along with the Dudesons worked him over for a while. The hot tag was made as all six men brawled all over Rock Hollow. One of the Dudesons used the bone of the Moondog as a weapon but only to get clocked by the Moondog himself.
Winners: "The Thumper" Frankie DeFalco, Moondog Bernard and Jake "The Milkman" Milliman
5. Nick Brubaker vs Ryan Howe
This was one of the best matches of the card. Ryan Howe continues to improve inside the ring from his WWE Tough Enough days. Brubaker is great no matter what promotion he wrestles for. The match opened with a series of arm locks and reversals by both men. Howe delivered a huge slam and a big boot on Nick's chest. Howe makes a great leap off the second rope almost scoring him a victory. Brubaker bounces back with a flying clothesline. A great match as the crowd once again was into the action. Brubaker caught Howe with a spinning kick to the head and a roll-up holding the tights.
Winner: Nick Brubaker
6. Tim "Zurk" Mazurkiewicz vs Jay Rhodes in a MMA Bout
This was a short exhibition bout in mixed martial arts. The bout was scheduled for three rounds at one minute per round. The match went the full three rounds. It was declared a draw. I'm not a MMA fan but it appeared Tim was ahead if points were scored.
Winner: Tim "Zurk" Mazurkiewicz
7. Thomas Sinclair vs Michael Flannery in a 20-Minute Iron Man Match
The contest started as a regular match. Flannery was quickly DQed when his manager Ryland Foxx used his cane on Sinclair. Flannery was upset and addressed the crowd. He announced that for real this was his last match due a tumor in his back. Doctors told him he must quit. Sinclair suggested the Iron Man Match with most falls in the twenty minutes. Flannery told Foxx not to get involved.
This was another good match. Flannery won the first fall in the first ten minutes. Sinclair bounced back to win two straight falls. Flannery had enough of Ryland's interference. Ryland cost his own man a pin attempt late in the bout. Sinclair lasted the full twenty minutes with a 2-1 lead. Flannery did powerbomb Foxx after the match. A big pop for both men as they shook hands after the contest.
Winner: Thomas Sinclair
8. Main Event: War Games Rule w/ Barbed Wire. Team FCW (Dan The Man, Waylon Beers, Bobby "The Business" Houston and FCW Commissioner Rocky James) vs Team Youth of the Nation (Stumpy, Justice Jones, Pauly Thomaselli and Bucky Collins)
This match was originally made to be in a steel cage with War Games type rules. Unfortunately due to the excessive heat outside, the steel cage could not be set up inside due to the low ceiling of Rock Hollow. It was made into a barbed wire match with weapons all around the ring. A bat and chair both wrapped in barbed wire, pool sticks and a cheese grater were used. The match began with a member of each team starting out for two minutes. The YOTN team won the coin toss for the man advantage. A member came in every two minutes. A decision couldn't be made until all eight members were in.
Bucky Collins vs Bobby Houston opened the match. The remaining order for team YOTN were Thomaselli, Stumpy and Jones. For Team FCW it was Beers, DTM and Jones. Former FCW Commissioner Capt. Jack made an appearance only to be bloodied. The action spilled all over the building with Thomaselli and Beers receiving most of the lacerations. The ending was weak with Commissioner James turning on his own team and stopping the contest to award it to Team Youth Of The Nation. Once again the crowd was into it.
Winners: Team Youth Of The Nation
Hats off to Richard Bonjour and FCW for putting on a very good show. The show did start a half-hour late but it was still a fun evening. The crowd was pleased. Well worth the $10. Not sure when FCW returns to Freeport. I asked both Bonjour and Stumpy to announce the shows once again on the CPW website. Not everyone has Facebook. Hopefully their will be big plans for WrestleRock 5 in 2013.
