Last Friday evening (July 13TH, 2012) kicked off the festivities for the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Hall-of-Fame weekend for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. IPW (Impact Pro Wrestling) is a very respected indy promotion in Iowa. Waterloo, Iowa is the city that plays host with the show being held at the beautiful Five Brothers Sullivan Arena. Hats off to Troy Peterson, owner of IPW, for always putting on a great show. This was my third year in a row attending this historic weekend. A chance to honor the legends and to see new stars shine.
A training seminar with WWE HOFers Gerald Brisco and Jim Ross was held earlier in the day. I will post the results within the next week. The doors opened at 5:30pm with a 7:00pm bell time. Fans gathered early for a meet-n-greet with both the legends and the IPW stars. The legendary Danny Hodge, Road Warrior Animal, writer Bill Apter, Gerald Brisco, Jim Ross, Perry Saturn, Larry "The Axe" Hennig, Colt Cabana, Maurice "Mad Dog" Vachon, Doug Gilbert, Bob Roop, Dan "The Beast" Severn and Baron von Raschke were all on hand to sign autographs. JBL's flight was grounded in Chicago. He missed the Friday night show but was on hand for the Saturday activities at the museum and the HOF ceremony on Saturday night.
1. NWA Champion Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana vs Marshall Scott
Colt was in "Classic" Cabana form last Friday evening. The bout opened with arm locks, the crowd totally cheering for Colt and a nice side-headlock by Cabana. Scott was blistered with a huge knife chop in the corner. Scott hung in the match but never showed a threat of winning. He missed two splashes off the rope that ended in disaster. Cabana scored a submission with his Boston Crab reversal submission.
Winner: NWA Champion Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana
2. 2012 20 Man Lou Thesz Cup Battle Royal
Fans love a good battle royal. IPW never disappoints. Some of the participants were Justin Decent, Ugly, Sparrow, Big Harley Jackson, "The Playboy" Anthony Draven, Adam Fury, James Jefferies, "The Big Picture" Ashton Christopher, Preston Maxwell and The Midwest Mauler.
The final two participants were Sparrow and "The Big Picture". Sparrow won the battle royal and the beautiful trophy. No, the trophy did not get smashed.
Winner: Sparrow
3. QT Marshall vs Micas Silva
This was an added bonus match. Both men were impressive earlier during the training seminar. The power of QT vs the speed of Silva. Marshall bulldozed over Silva early in the bout. Silva countered with a series of am drags and then dropkicks QT outside to the arena floor. The match was good and Silva surprised me by nailing a huge superkick. QT appeared to be the favorite but not on this night.
Winner: Micas Silva
4. Perry Saturn and Shawn Nautilus vs AJ Smooth, Matty Star and Ryan Slade (Handicap Match)
*The match was originally suppose to be a singles match between the former WWE, ECW & WCW star in Saturn vs the IPW great in Smooth. Fans in IL would know Smooth, Star & Slade as members of the Blitz promotion. Saturn controlled the singles match early on and was quickly triple-teamed. Bill Apter from Sports Wrestling Illustrated fame was the acting commissioner of the evening. He ordered a 3 vs 2 handicap match. Saturn's partner was the large and powerful Shawn Nautilus. Shawn was another young man who scored well in the training seminar.
The handicap match began with Perry being worked over by the Canadian heels. A hot tag to Nautilus was painful to Matty Star. The three IPW/Blitz stars were able to ground the inexperienced Nautilus by working over his knee. Slade slapped on a half-crab. The powerful Nautilus managed a double-suplex on Smooth and Slade. Saturn was tagged in and began to destroy Star. Shawn takes Slade and Smooth out while Saturn scores a roll-up on Star. A very good match.
Winner: Perry Saturn and Shawn Nautilus
Intermission
5. Mick Drake vs Adam Fury
Drake is a smaller competitor compared to his opponent. Adam Fury is a big boy that I had the honor to see earlier during the training seminar. This was a short match. The large Fury opened strong but was quickly grounded by a Drake leg lock. The impressive Fury would bounce back to over-power the smaller Drake.
Winner: Adam Fury
6. Tony Sly vs Juan Fourneau
I'm not familiar with Fourneau. Sly is a crafty veteran with a Christopher Daniels type look. This was another short match but enjoyable. Sly controlled most of the action but Fourneau never gave up. The IPW heel would eventually win this bout.
Winner: Tony Sly
7. The IPW Tag Team Champions Justin Descent and Ugly vs James Jefferies and "The Big Picture" Ashton Christopher
This was a good title match. The fans popped a lot during this match. The champs dominated early on. I like Jefferies. He is a great heel who looks like Justin Bieber. He does a great job acting irritated during the Bieber chants by the crowd. This match had both comedy and good action rolled into it. Jefferies ended up pinning Ugly to capture the gold.
Winners: The new Tag Team Champions James Jefferies and "The Big Picture" Ashton Christopher.
8. The Main Event: IPW Champion Nicky Free vs TS Aggressor in a Legends Lumberjack Match
This was an awesome match to end the evening. The crowd was totally into this match. Nicky Free has been the cocky champion for a long time. I had the honor of interviewing him two years ago after he had a classic match against Austin Aries. Nicky came to ringside with some of the IPW heels such as James Jefferies, Matty Star, Ryan Slade and Big Harley Jackson. They were Free's lumberjacks.
TS Aggressor was the former trainer of Nicky Free. A teacher vs student match. Aggressor brought some of the legends to ringside to serve as his lumberjacks. Road Warrior Animal, Dan Severn, Bill Apter, Baron von Raschke and Danny Hodge were present at ringside.
The younger, arrogant champion controlled the match early on and threw his opponent outside to the wolves. The IPW stars took cheap shots on the popular challenger. Animal and Severn would come around to make sure that TS wouldn't suffer too much punishment. TS bounced back and it was Free's turn to meet the legends. The biggest pop of the night was when Danny Hodge cold-cocked the champion. The Baron also applied his dreaded "claw" on Nicky. The Baron's head looked like it was going to explode. TS was able to pin the champion and seek his revenge.
Winner: NEW IPW Champion TS Aggressor
