The Five Brothers Sullivan Arena in Waterloo, Iowa played host to IPW's (Impact Pro Wrestling) training seminar that was held on July 13TH at 1pm. The seminar was part of the Hall-Of-Fame weekend for the Dan Gable Museum. I already posted the results of the wrestling show that was held later that evening. WWE HOFers Jim Ross and Gerald Brisco judged eighteen matches and would give feedback later in the locker room in private. The legendary Danny Hodge assisted Brisco & Ross. The seminar was about two hours. Each match was between six to eight minutes.
This gave the Anchovie opportunities to discuss wrestling with talent from all over the states. PCW's The Butcher was on hand from IL. Matty Star, Ryan Slade & AJ smooth from both BLITZ (IL) and IPW (Iowa) also competed in the seminar. Favorites from last year Shawn Nautilus and Derrick Cornell made another appearance. I had the privilege of talking with Spartan from Queens, NY and "The Ripper" John Karloff from Pennsylvania. Both competed in the second match and were impressive. Another individual QT Marshall turned some heads. The only two ladies Farrah Lee and Miss Frankie caught most of our attention. Farrah Lee impressed the Anchovie a lot.
1. Ryan Slade defeated Matty Star with a Perfect Plex. Both IPW, BLITZ stars gave a basic match. Expected more from these two but still a solid match.
2. Spartan rolled-up "The Ripper" John Karloff after a missed splash in the corner. They both received solid pops from the crowd. Nice to see Karloff use the bear-hug. Keep the classic holds alive.
3. Benjamin Quinn pinned "The Next Generation" Nick Merriman. Merriman had a nice look to him but showed levels of green at times. Some stiff kicks including an impressive inseguri gave Quinn the duke.
4. Justin Decent won over James Jefferies. Two of IPW's finest. They would be on opposing teams later in the evening during the tag team title match. Good match with fast, paced action.
5. Nicky Free pinned AJ Smooth. The current reigning IPW Champion Nicky Free gave a great performance against fellow IPW star AJ Smooth. Smooth had the champ in trouble early on working over his right leg. A very impressive full Nelson slam gave Free the "W". Big pop from ringside.
6. Adam Fury and Big Harley Jackson defeated "The Playboy" Anthony Draven and the Juggernaut. This match had the beef. These were some big guys who delivered some hard shots. Big Harley Jackson is a favorite of mine in IPW. A big elbow by Jackson on Draven ended the bout.
7. Derrick Cornell destroyed Joey Anderson with the Texas Tornado Discus Punch. Cornell dominated most of the match. Nailed some hard chops and kicks early on. Anderson never showed much. Cool to see Cornell nail the tornado punch at the end.
8. Cowboy Troy Hansen beat Alex the Great. Hansen was another rip-off to Stan Hansen. This match wasn't the best. Alex was like-able but never "Great". Troy Hansen dominated the majority of the match. A body splash won the match for Hansen.
9. Shawn Nautilus scores the big "W" over Preston Maxwell. Shawn was one of the bigger men that also had speed. I saw him last year but he had a much more impressive outing. Shawn dominated Maxwell with power moves. The Big Show would be proud when Nautilus delivered a thunderous chokeslam after catching Maxwell from the top rope.
10. Mike Matixx scores a submission victory over Mark "The Shark" Modest. These were two small guys who gave a good match. Nothing flashy, just good mat action. A double arm DDT and a dragon sleeper won it for Matixx.
11. Barry Ryte cheated over Vash Heartly. It was great to see another wrestler from IL compete in Ryte. Heartly gave a good performance by nailing both a hurricurana and a bulldog. Ryte used the ropes to pin Heartly. Solid match.
12. Austin Manix and Mavado defeated Caleb Stills and Chaz Montana. This match was fast-paced and physical at times but also sloppy. One of the wrestlers accidentally took out a person at ringside who was sitting next to Gerald Brisco on a botched move.
13. Farhan Faruqui small packaged Mike Drake. Farhan is a small guy who stormed the ring like a cat. Drake grounded his opponent at times but came up on the short end.
14. The Butcher pinned Marvelous Matt Mercer. Jim Ross didn't appear to do cartwheels as the Butcher was announced as the former PCW Champion. This was a solid match. Both guys delivered some hard shots. The Butcher won with a neckbreaker.
15. Micas Silva super kicked Logan Easton LeReaux to victory. A fast-paced match with leap frogs and arm drags. Silva was impressive in the ring.
16. Miss Frankie defeated Farrah Lee with the X-Factor. Lee dominated most of the match until the ending. Hats off to Miss Frankie as this was only her third match. Lee looked like a pro and was fun to watch.
17. Ryan Slade pinned QT Marshall. This was one of the better matches of the seminar. Easily the best match of the second half. A physical bout with good mat action. QT nailed a massive dropkick late in the contest. A powerslam into a roll-up gave Slade his second win in the seminar.
18. Matty Star won over Prentice G. Matty was also wrestling his second match of the night. This was a much better match for Matty. Star rolled-up his opponent in the corner and illegally had his feet on the rope.
-Hats off to everyone who competed in the seminar. I'm sure it was tough to wrestle having Gerald Brisco, Jim Ross and Danny Hodge at ringside.
-Not a huge crowd for 1pm in the afternoon. Most people were probably at work and the main show was later in the evening. The seminar was different and fun to watch.
