July 12th-13th was Hall-of-Fame weekend for the George Tragos/Lou Thesz section of the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. This is a must weekend for any wrestling fan. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and "Cowboy" Bill Watts were the inductees. Adam Copeland (Edge) was there to receive the prestigious Lou Thesz Award. IPW (Impact Pro Wrestling) floored its fans with a very exciting wrestling show on Friday night. The Dan Gable Museum hosted some educating seminars on Saturday morning to early afternoon with the HOF banquet in the evening.
The weekend kicked off with a training seminar at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. Stars of IPW along with other indy wrestlers from all over the country would demonstrate their craft for WWE HOFers Gerald Brisco and Jim Ross. Troy Peterson, owner of IPW, did a great job in organizing this event. The seminar was open to fans, family members and other wrestlers to show support of those competing to hopefully become a future star. There were fourteen matches this year and were better quality then last year. Most spectators from last year agreed that there were too many bouts and also the quality of talent improved for the 2013 seminar.
1. Ryan Slade vs Barry Ryte
A great way to open up with these two great competitors. The crowd popped for most of the match as the action rolled back-n-forth. Ryte almost scored a victory with a thumb to the eye and a hard slam. A roll-up with handful of tights eventually gave Barry the win.
Winner: Barry Ryte
2. Mike Drake vs Adam "Flash" Chandlar
This was another good bout. Drake was playing a Damien Sandow type character. Chandlar reminded one of a young Shelton Benjamin. Chandlar opened with a series of arm bars. Adam was easily the aggressor early on with "flashy" moves including a jawbreaker and a very impressive Russian leg sweep. Drake tried to steal a win but was handed a thunderous Rock Bottom for his losing efforts.
Winner: Adam "Flash" Chandlar
3. Bazoke Joe"Hard Candy" vs Number 1 Brian Johnson.
Another solid match as Johnson began with a side headlock. The man known as "Hard Candy" would counter with a backdrop and rough clothesline. A lot of action continued in this contest with Johnson nailing stiff elbow shots to the chest. A beautiful but clean roll-up gave Johnson the "W".
Winner: Number 1 Brian Johnson.
4. Knuckles vs John Graber
Graber entered the ringside area sporting a loud green-n-black neck tie. Knuckles blind-sided his opponent but the tables would eventually turn. This match was both good and sloppy at times. Graber controlled most of the match except when Knuckles used illegal tactics like choking with a red bandanna. Graber hit some big moves like an elbow off the ropes and a fantastic looking bulldog. A hard Insaguri and a body splash put the fork in Knuckles.
Winner: John Graber
5. Flex vs Devin Thomas
Flex was a massive muscular specimen while Thomas was the technician in the ring. These two gelled well together providing the audience with an entertaining match. Thomas was the aggressor who would call the shots. Flex who did look green at times was also impressive and would be interesting to watch in a year from now. Thomas delivered an impressive high dropkick and a flying elbow off the ropes. Flex would make the late British Bulldog proud with a long, high suplex and a running power-slam for the duke.
Winner: Flex
6. Hot Shot Danny Duggan vs The Big Sexy Beast Al Sanchez
Duggan was one of the better looking wrestlers on the card. He easily outclassed his opponent. Classic mat moves, series of arm bars and pure speed was too much for the larger Sanchez. When Sanchez got into the match, he botched a moonsault. A spectacular DDT and a school boy roll-up gave Duggan the impressive victory.
Winner: Hot Shot Danny Duggan
7. Warfare Jeremy Hadley vs Jermaine Johnson
Johnson came to ringside with a short, lumpy looking dominatrix type gal who was leading him on a leash. She makes Vickie Guerrero look like a ten. Starla Love was her name. The shorter Hadley nailed a dropkick to his opponent's knees. Johnson took a hard spill to the floor as Jeremy lowered the ropes. A mighty pop echoed the arena as Jermaine drilled his opponent with a flying leap. Johnson would bounce back with some vicious ax handles. Hadley would eventually catch his opponent crotch-first on the top rope. A sloppy version of the Frankensteiner won him the match.
Winner: Warfare Jeremy Hadley
8. Ricky Love vs Matty Star
This was a solid match between two of IPW's top stars. Ricky Love was the current IPW Champion going into the afternoon festivities. After a lock up, Love used arm drag and a flying dropkick. Star would bounce back trying an arm bar submission. Both IPW stars collided head first towards the end. An impressive Death Valley Driver would give the champion the win.
Winner: Ricky Love
9. Mark Sterling & Jason Static vs Justin Decent and James Jefferies
This was the first tag match of the afternoon. Decent and Jefferies are popular among the IPW fans. Decent has that Al Snow look to him while Jefferies is a cross between Justin Bieber and a young looking member of the Rockers. The talented IPW duo controlled most of the match with quick tags. Jefferies kept moving around the ring like he was a member of the Rockers. Sterling would take control as he worked over the younger and smaller Jefferies. Stactic & Sterling used some power moves but it wasn't enough. Justin Decent was finally tagged in to clean house. A huge power slam along with a thrilling running Death Valley Driver ended the contest.
Winners: Justin Decent & James Jefferies
10. AJ Smooth & Nicky Free
Another great match with two top IPW stars. It was great to see Nicky Free again. The former IPW Champion returned to ring action after retiring in late 2012. His classic with Austin Aries in 2010 is still one of the best in IPW history. Free controlled the match early on but the veteran Smooth bounced back with a great take down and a leg lock to wear down the former champion. Another great bout for the afternoon.
Winner: Nicky Free
11. Irish Jack vs Geek Singh
Irish Jack was more loud then anything. Reminded me of former WWE veteran Iron Mike Sharpe. Geek Singh portrayed himself as a nerd with glasses. Singh was very impressive in the ring. Jack rocked Singh with a vicious slap across the face sailing the glasses into the second row. The pissed off wrestler from India hip-tossed his Irish opponent. The Irish one was on the floor only to be brought back by an impressive suplex. Jack scored a hard neck breaker but missed a huge dropkick. Singh was dead on nailing his opponent with a Russian leg sweep/DDT type combo.
Winner: Geek Singh
12. Brian Gott & Art the Masterpiece vs Derek Cornell and the Juggernaut
It was great to see Derek Cornell at the seminar. He's a journeyman that has wrestled all over the country. He's had great matches in the past over this HOF weekend. His partner is the large, beefy Juggernaut that his hard to push around in the ring. Art is an impressive looking rookie with a great physique on him. Does remind me of Chris Masters early in his career. Maybe a different name change should be in consideration. This was an interesting match with a lot of power moves and hard punches. A big suplex by the Masterpiece and a leg drop off the rope by Gotts earned them the victory.
Winners: Brian Gott & Art the Masterpiece.
13. The Omaha Chainsaw SM King vs Devin Thomas.
Devin Thomas would be the only competitor to wrestle twice this afternoon. King had the look of WWE United States Champion Dean Ambrose. King attempted to portray himself as a screaming psycho or lunatic. He ranted a little too long on the mic. The match itself was decent with King winning with the use of the bull hammer. Wade Barrett might have been proud.
Winner: The Omaha Chainsaw SM King
14. QT Marshall vs Jorge Santi
Very physical contest and good ending to an impressive seminar. Good mat wrestling and hard punches were shown throughout the contest. Santi took a hard spill as QT swept him off the second rope. The move of the afternoon was the roll-up as this match ended with Santi scoring the pin.
Winner: Jorge Santi
After the seminar, all the participants would go into a conference room to hear their results from HOFers Brisco & Ross. Fans, members of the press and others in attendance were not allowed inside. Hats off to all the young stars who participated and best of luck to each of them. Fun afternoon.
I will post the results to the IPW show that took place later that evening on a separate spread. Hope to get that posted within a week. I also hope to post interviews with Ricky Love and James Jefferies.
