Last Saturday night in Rochelle, IL, NAPW (North American Pro Wrestling) once again heated up the Hickory Grove Banquet Center. This was the fourth show for NAPW at this venue and the first non-benefit show. The first show had around 200 fans while the last two slipped to around 100. Management gave me the positive news that 150-175 fans ventured out into the cold to enjoy a fun evening of pro wrestling. A lot of loyal fans returned along with many new faces.
"Fast Talk" Marty Fairlane was the master of ceremonies. A.J. Lewis and senior official Getch were announced as the referees for the card. Popular NAPW star Anthony Antonelli entered the ring questioning why he never received his re-match with NAPW Champion Pauly Thomaselli after the new GM KaDance Kelli robbed him of his opportunity last December. The new GM strolled to ringside escorted by the Tag Team Champions, Justice Jones & Aaron Xavier along with NAPW Champion Pauly Thomaselli. Ms. Kelli announced that if Antonelli can defeat three wrestlers in a Gauntlet match, he will receive a re-match in Rochelle on April 5th.
1. Gauntlet Match
A) Anthony Antonelli vs Joey Brittain
The Italian Warhorse in Antonelli was ready to face off the owner of Stateline Pro's own Joey Brittain. A Pearl Harbor attack by Brittain had things spill onto the floor. Anthony bounced back with thunderous chops. The entire bout lasted 2 minutes when a crescent kick to the head along with a sharp DDT ended Brittain's evening.
B) Anthony Antonelli vs Chris Miller
Chris Miller made his NAPW debut by attacking Antonelli and nailing a great leg drop. A huge pop for the Italian star when he placed his opponent in the famous sharpshooter. T-A-P Out!
C) A.A. vs Machine
The opponent got bigger and stronger in the final contest of the Gauntlet. Machine made his presence felt by dominating the fan favorite in the corner. A vicious beat down and thunderous clothesline grounded the Italian flyer. A sloppy cover by Machine disgusted the champion Thomaselli who was still at ringside. A distracted Machine was rolled up by Antonelli for the "W".
Winner: Anthony Antonelli
* Jay Kross made his return by attacking Machine. The two large bulls have unfinished business that will hopefully be settled down the line.
2. "Beautiful" Brad Kevins vs El Magnifico.
The popular masked luche libre against a newcomer. This was a solid match with a popular ending. The bout opened with comedy as Magnifico wanted to dance and pinched his opponent's butt. Kevins nailed his foe with a beautiful dropkick. The match went back-n-forth. The bout came to a close when the newcomer delivered a low blow and hit his version of sliced bread.
Winner: "Beautiful" Brad Kevins
* El Magnifico smashed a pinata over Brad's head spilling candy all over ringside. My twin nephews along with many other children in attendance swarmed over the candy. Looked like a mini-battle royal.
3. Collin Smith vs "The Difference" Joey Rose
The fans always pop for Joey. The smaller Smith was another newcomer who had an impressive debut. His quickness helped him even though Joey controlled most of the bout. Joey nailed his opponent with a cool looking bulldog onto his knee. Something impressive and different from Rose.
Winner: "The Difference" Joey Rose.
* DOJ (Department of Justice) had some unfinished business with Joey. Rose was creamed. A match between these two rivals will take place on April 5th in Rochelle.
Intermission
4. NAPW Tag Team Champions Justice Jones and Aaron Xavier vs The East/West Express of "Loverboy" Jeff Luxon and "Ravishing" Ryan Kross.
This was a re-match from their great match back in December where Jones/Xavier cheated to be crowned first ever NAPW Tag Champions. The bout began with comedy antics and turned into a good match. The crafty Luxon opened the title match with a side headlock on Jones. The powerful Kross would enter and slap a full Nelson on Xavier. This match had a lot of good power moves, mat action and fast-paced moves. The ref got knocked out at one point. NAPW Champion Pauly Thomaselli tried to interfere. Kross ended up rolling Jones for the pin but the vixen GM Kelli would reverse the decision.
Winners: Aaron Xavier and Justice Jones
5. William Jacobs vs Dave Rydell
This was a very good bout between the rookie Jacobs and the veteran Rydell. Jacobs once again hits ringside sporting his holy white jacket and embracing his bible. Something I really like in this kid. The veteran suckered shot his young opponent by nailing him with the mic. Jacobs gets flippe donto the arena floor. It was back-n-forth action throughout the contest. Rydell would score the victory with his version of White Noise.
Winner: Dave Rydell
6. The Main Event: NAPW Champion Pauly Thomaselli vs Mike Anthony
This was a great match between two former state wrestling champions. Anthony is also the former WCPW Champion and has WWE experience. Pauly has had some of the best matches for NAPW in the last couple of years with victories over Justice Jones, former TNA star Homicide & the popular Antonelli.
Both competitors locked up to start off the championship match. Nobody could control the bout early on. the rowdy fans were treated to several take downs, reversals and mat wrestling. Anthony pulled Thomaselli apart with his version of the Regal Stretch. Pauly would eventually counter with the classic tree stump. Anthony would put the sleeper on the champion. The GM Kelli sprinted to ringside with the Tag Champions to distract the referee. Justice Jones ended up knocking out Anthony with a kick allowing the champ to gain an easy cover.
Winner: Pauly Thomaselli
