IPW (Impact Pro Wrestling) is one of the best indy promotions in Iowa. Every year they participate in the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame Show that is part of the Hall of Fame weekend for the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. The venue is the Five Brothers Sullivan Convention Center. Almost 500 roaring fans packed this venue last Friday evening (July 18th). This was one of the best weekends weather wise for this event.
IPW Founder Troy Peterson does an amazing job putting on a great show each year. Many of the legends and inductees were on hand to sign autographs before, during and after the show. The list of those who were at the Friday night show included Jim Ross, Gerald Brisco, Danny Hodge, Wes Brisco, Colt Cabana, Adam Pearce, Baron Von Raschke, Larry "The Axe" Hennig, Scott Steiner, family members representing the late "Mad Dog" Vachon, Karl Lauer of the Cauliflower Alley Club and UFC Legend Randy Couture. Rick Steiner and Dan Gable could not make the show but were at the museum on Saturday afternoon to greet fans.
1. Latin Thunder vs Matty Star
A very good fast-paced opening bout. The crowd was clapping and popping right off the bat. Both men could hit some high risk moves and showed skilled mat techniques. The masked Latin Thunder was too much for the IPW veteran.
Winner: Latin Thunder.
2. The Fifth Annual Lou Thesz Cup Battle Royal. The winner received a nice trophy that did not end up getting destroyed. Some of the participants included:
Mik Drake, Bazooka Joe, The Juggernaut, Geek Singh, Billy Kryptonite, James Jefferies, The Big Picture, Justin Decent, Michael Monsoon, Jaysin Strife, Royale, Sparrow, Devin Thomas.
Winner: Michael Monsoon
3. Ariya Daivari vs Sepio Saunders
The veteran Daivari controlled most of this bout. Sepio Saunders is a big, muscular athlete that shows some promise. Saunders hit some big power moves but eventually fell victim to the magic Carpet Ride.
Winner: Ariya Daivari
4. Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana and "The Tangerine Dream" Ricky Love vs "Scrap Iron" Adam Pearce and Sparrow
The crowd was very much into this match. Loud echo chops off Sparrow's chest by the popular Cabana. A cheap clothesline on Love gave his opponents the upper edge. This was a fun match to sit back and enjoy. Ricky Love would eventually score the "W" on Sparrow.
* Adam Pearce would deliver a devastating piledriver to his tag team partner after the match.
Winners: Cabana & Love
*** Matty Star hit ringside to take cheap shots on the legends. The one that he really ripped on was DDP. Page came out to deliver two Diamond Cutters to Star. After that, he used the time to show a video and promote his brand of Yoga.
Intermission
5. Mark Sterling vs Hannibal
A short but decent match to come after intermission. The screaming Canadian brute known as Hannibal perked up the crowd. His power moves dominated the match. Sterling picked up a cheap victory by placing his foot on the ropes.
Winner: Mark Sterling
6. "The Intellectual Punk" Tony Sly, "The Natural" Nate Alsin, Nate Redwing vs The IPW Tag Team Champions James Jefferies and Ugly along w/ Justin Decent.
Sly, who is a classic heel, was able to get the tag champions to put up their gold in a 6-man match. This was a terrific match. The highlights were mostly done by James Jefferies flying around the ring like a young version of The Rockers. Jefferies won the match for his team by nailing his version of slice bread.
Winners: Jefferies, Ugly & decent
7. IPW Heavy Weight Champion Nicky Free vs A. J. Smooth
This was an outstanding title match. These two athletes have been two of the best for IPW in the last five years. It was five years ago at this particular event that Nicky Free scored one of his best victories over TNA Legend Austin Aries. On that same card, A.J. Smooth gave a good performance but fell short against the current WWE Money in The Bank holder Seth Rollins. Smooth used the IPW title as a weapon to score the win over Free.
Winner: New IPW Champion A. J. Smooth
8. Wes Brisco vs "The Big Picture" Ashton Christopher in the 3rd Annual Legends Lumberjack Match
This was a good match but hard to see at times with fans in the front row standing up a lot. Ringside was surrounded by both the IPW stars and the HOF legends. Former TNA star Wes Brisco and IPW Stand-out "The Big Picture" each gave a good account of themselves. The young Brisco picked up the victory.
Winner: Wes Brisco
-Congrats to Troy Peterson and the entire IPW roster for another great show.
-The Training Seminar hosted by Gerald Brisco and Jim Ross was held earlier that day. I will provide results for that shortly sometime within the next week.
