Having recently competed in a submission grappling tournament it is nowhere near what you see on TV. The one that I was involved with basically was set up like an amateur wrestling tournament, and had several matches going on at one time making it difficult to keep track of anything with any regularity. Granted it was all pure grappling and submissions so this may be a little different set up having a bunch of different disciplines and stuff. If I had at least a month’s notice I’d probably give this one a shot too.

It was alright as a competitor but hella boring as a spectator. It was just a long day, I waited about 7 hours before my first match, then it was a 10 minute break until my next match, and another 10 minute break before my third one... so it was hard to initially get re-fired up after sitting in a gym all day then hard to stay fresh one fight after another...

I'll read this as you won your initial match and the subsequent one in order to advance to the third...or am I completely wrong?

Yep, I won my first two... the first one with a side headlock (not kidding), the second one with a rear naked choke, and I lost the third to a triangle arm-bar... Unfortunately, it was single elimination 16 man bracket so I did not place.

No shame in a side headlock...ask Carlos Newton how effective that hold can be. (I finally have a good reason to post this pic...dig on the fact that I got both fighter's autographs!)
