"See the man who has wrestled NWA TNA champion Abyss" That might be the most pathetic sell point I have ever seen on an event advertisement. Why not, "come see a bunch of guys who have watched WWE Supertstars!!!!!"? Dude that's just a bit markish for a so-called promoter to do.

"See the man who has wrestled NWA TNA champion Abyss"
I'm gonna give them a pass on this one. As a promoter, your job is to get people interested enough in seeing your product that they get up off the couch and into one of you seats.
A promoter needs to find a way to make a connection to "the casual fan" and if they recognize the name Abyss on the card, it might lend credibility to the guy who was deemed good enough to wrestle him.
While it might sound like a bit of a reach to those on the board (we who follow wrestling more so than casual fans), that one line might be enough to bring a few more people to the show.

Gotta agree with Chris here. It may seem lame to those in the biz, but to a caual fan it could mean the difference between showing up or not.
It's merely a marketing gimmick. Leave it at that. How many lame ads do you see for other products? Plenty. This is no different. If you are in the same business as some ad that's a bit off, it's lame to you. To those not in the know well, they don't know.

man dat bogus i though abyss was on the card I originally read that and thought that Abyss was booked too. That is among the reasons that it is lame. Imagine if the shows who booked Jimmy Jacobs or Colt Cabana pulled that stunt. The posters would be three feet long. I don't call it a marketing technique. It really looks pretty lame to me. I am not trying to hate either. The pictures of the guys on the poster should be enough to make or break a card. If they don't look the part, I am not going.

If you thought Abyss was on that show you need reading glasses. I thought it was quite clear. And in an area where the guys you mentioned are known you won't need the additional stuff. In a start-up group in a small area they need any edge they can get. However, I will say it's not something I would do.

I think the big stretch could be calling something an arena in Mattoon
