POWW Entertainment had a lot to celebrate, as it was the one year anniversary of the company under the POWW banner. With 320 fans in attendence the night began with owner Jimmy Blaze and the POWW roster coming down to the ring to speak to the fans. Jimmy had a few big announcements to make, one of which being the Return of Forsaken! The King of POWW Entertainment will make his presence felt again at the POWW King of The Royals this year. And the crowd is loving it!
Another announcement after Jimmy thanked all the fans and the roster of super heroes and villains came as Master J and former Champ Brandon Bishop came into the ring and got in Jimmy's face over Bishop's loss of the title. As Master J and Jimmy went back and forth Master J lost his cool and poked Jimmy in the chest. After a couple warnings of the coming repercussions of Master J's actions, Jimmy Blaze had no choice but to go ahead with his threat, and make it a promise, and a promise fulfilled as Master J was suspended indefinitely from managing, and relegated to announcer status only- leaving the M.O.B. without his guidance. At least... for now.
As for Bishop, complaining that he was never pinned for the belt Jimmy Blaze decided to put Bishop in action- against the Arapaho Warrior Thunderfoot! Well as the action kicked off, Bishop started things off winning a test of strength, but Thunderfoot showed his own strengths by using his quickness to take advantage for a high monkey flip. Bishop scooted to the outside to converse with Jade, and as he rolled back into the ring, he caught Thunderfoot in an armbar to a pin attempt. After a few unsuccessful rolls to the pin, Thunderfoot countered into a pin of his own. Jade provided the distraction as Bishop took advantage and went back to work on Thunderfoot's left shoulder. Thunderfoot regained his footing (no pun intended) and laid some chops into the chest of Bishop, but Bishop nailed the clothesline turning Thunderfoot inside out. Thunderfoot nailed a 2nd rope leg drop to try to put Bishop away, but Bishop retaliated with the pedigree to put Thunderfoot away for the pin.
In the second match of the night, Dehok of Pure Evil took on Hardcore Craig of American History Next in single's action. Craig tried to run down Dehok coming off the ropes, but Dehok simply proved too big and sturdy to be knocked down so easily. Craig finally got Dehok off his feet though, but as he tried to capitalize, Taylor Made grabbed his foot from ringside. Hardcore Craig dragged her inside the ring, and as they stood face to face she slapped him at which point Dehok took the opening to attack. Craig retained control of the match at this point however, working Dehok's left arm and landing clubbing blows to the pectoral muscle. A belly to back on Dehok was followed by an unorthodox almost reverse Thesz press/catapult that saw Craig hung up on the ropes. As Dehok distracted the ref Taylor Made choked Craig, followed by Dehok seeking the pin, but being denied the victory. Dehok stayed in firm control, and again allowed Taylor Made the choke on Hardcore Craig as he distracted the ref, but Craig retaliated with a spinning sunset flip pin attempt, it wasn't enough, and Dehok went for a 2nd rope leg drop. Missing the leg drop gave Craig the opening to hit a clothesline, a sidewalk slam, and finally a TKO for the pin.
The 3rd match of the night was the Regional Title rematch between Champion Chris Cairo and Trevor Blanchard of the M.O.B. As the match got underway Trevor claimed that Cairo was using the tights to gain leverage in the first exchange- then going to the ropes and jaw jacking to the fans. Cairo caught him in a wristlock as he came back into the match, but Blanchard reversed it into a headlock, snapping Cairo over into a pin attempt. Cairo got out and returned to the wrist lock, dropping the leg on the wrist to further the damage inflicted by the hold. As Blanchard broke free of the hold Cairo found himself unable to continue his pursuit, blowing out his knee. As Blanchard turned his back to his "wounded opponent" Cairo returned to his feet, an obvious ploy, the same that Blanchard tried to use at Slamfest against the Regional Champ. Cairo attempted a schoolboy roll up, but Blanchard kicked out. Black Iron choked Cairo as Blanchard kept the ref distracted, followed by Blanchard again focusing on taunting the crowd. After a job to the throat Blanchard chopped Cairo into the corners and against the ropes. Cairo tried a float-over to a sunset flip but to no avail. As the ref checked Cairo for injury Blanchard used the opportunity to keep trying to loosen the 2nd rope turnbuckle. Cairo rallied, but Blanchard caught him with a mule kick. Cairo answered with a drop kick. Trevor was handed a pair of bras knuckles, but Cairo saw it coming and wrestled them away. Cairo then laid Blanchard out earning himself a DQ, but retaining the belt regarded. As M.O.B continued the member's beat down of Chris Cairo, eventually Kanoa made the save. Kanoa claimed that with his record he should be the #1 contender, but Blanchard claimed the same thing... at which point Rick Paradise, the POWW commish came out to the ring and announced in Iowa it'll be Kanoa against Trevor Blanchard for the #1 contendership for the Regional Title. And before anyone begins to weep too much, it was announced that Kanoa would take on Black Iron later tonight.
After that Mr. Ricolo standing in for interviewer Billy Whack brought Wild Mayhem to the ring to ask the question that’s been on everyone’s minds… Is Wild Mayhem finally going to cut loose from Justin James? But before the team could say a word either way, Justin James hit the ring bringing with him referee PeeWee Parella holding 2 pieces of cake. James let the crowd know that it was Mikey Wild’s birthday, and said he wanted to go against his usual bad nature and do something nice for his guys. So he gave them the cake and led the crowd in the singing of Happy Birthday. It was just too little too late for Justin, as both pieces of cake were returned to him the hard way- smashed into his face, before he was pushed over Matt Mayhem’s back by Mikey. The team left the ring to an amazing ovation from the crowd, and Justin James threw a tantrum furthering his humiliation.
Kanoa and Black Iron met in the next bout, with Kanoa taunting Black Iron eye to eye and the crowd was firmly behind the Flyin’ Hawaiian here. Kanoa offered a test of strength which Black Iron accepted at first getting the lead, but Kanoa reversed into a monkey flip, followed by a northern lights suplex. Kanoa crotched Black Iron on the middle of the top rope, then launched himself off the turnbuckle viciously kicking Black Iron and both men headed to the outside. As Black Iron stood against the ring, Kanoa ran down the aisle towards him, being launched by Black Iron up against the ring ropes, where he bounced back off and caught Black Iron in a hurricanrana crashing him against the steel steps. As both men recovered Black Iron caught Kanoa with a neck breaker on the 2nd rope and then leading the ref away giving Trevor Blanchard the opening to attack. Melanie Cruise stepped up to Black Iron who met her with a spraying mist temporarily blinding her, and covering her in the noxious substance. Black Iron and Blanchard used misdirection to continue staying in control and double teaming Kanoa, but Melanie made the save getting Blanchard away from her man. But while that happened on the outside, Black Iron hit a back cracker on the inside that looked like it would spell certain doom for Kanoa. He followed it up with a 2nd rope leg drop, but Kanoa kicked out of the pin attempt that followed. A double underhook piledriver on Kanoa followed, but again Black Iron couldn’t capitalize. Kanoa rallied with a series of dropkicks, hanging Black Iron up in the tree of woe, landing a solid dropkick on Black Iron’s chest. Kanoa locked in an ankle lock, but Black Iron rolled out and picked Kanoa up for a Samoan drop. Kanoa rolled through it however, and got the crucifix pin for the victory. Kanoa ran out to the crowd to celebrate, and one has to look at all of this and wonder if maybe finally Kanoa has returned to being his old self?
Up next was Nick H’s stable taking on Tag Champs Outta Control in a return match from Slamfest. As all the men came down to the ring, one man was noticeably absent, and that was Adam Evans. Nick H. took he mic and told Jimmy Blaze and Joey Cece that he’d given Evans the night off, and instead had a surprise for them. A man both members of OC have history with- Warm Carlos! Cece and Carlos started things out with Cece overpowering, moving to the go-behind to a belly to back slam. Following that exchange Diego and Blaze tagged in, and again the size and strength advantage of the members of OC proved to be too much for Nick H’s guys. Blaze and Cece locked in full nelsons on Carlos and Diego respectively, leading them to the corner where “Sexy” Sandra D was waiting to spray both men with scented body spray. While commotion was breaking out after this incident and the ref’s back was turned, Diego snatched up Nick H’s rebel flag and used it on both members of OC. With Blaze’s leg now getting locked up in the ropes both Carlos and Diego took turns working over the leg Diego damaged with the flag’s steel pole. Diego went to put Blaze away with a figure four, but Blaze used his strength and leverage to turn it around eventually hitting a fall away slam on Carlos and getting the tag to Cece who cleaned house before both Blaze and Cece took it home and scored the pinfall.
The American History Next/Pure Evil contest continued in the 6th match of the night. Hardcore Craig picked up the win against Dehok in the first singles match, and this time Steve Stone would be looking to make it 2 and 0 against Scott Spade. Spade and Stone went back and forth for a bit until Stone took the advantage, leaving Spade to run to the outside to seek comfort in the arms of his Pure Evil cohorts Dehok and Taylor Made. As he slid back in he nailed Stone with a thumb to the eyes, but Stone quickly recovered, locking Spade in an armbar, taunting Taylor Made with blown kisses. Picking Spade up off the mat and leading him to the corner, Spade turned it around launching Stone into the opposite corner where he hit hard and fell to the mat. Spade choked Stone in the corner as Dehok and Taylor Made circled like sharks on the outside. Spade led the ref away allowing Dehok to continue the choke until Hardcore Craig chased him away. Spade continued working to put Stone away, but to no avail. Dehok again went for the choke, but Stone fought him off. Spade hit a snap mare to a sleeper, using the ropes for leverage, Stone managed to escape the hold, and then dodged the Ace Crusher hitting a spinning neck breaker, but Taylor Made climbed to ringside to cause the distraction, keeping Stone from getting the pin. Stone caught her and planted a kiss before returning his attention to Spade who again missed the Ace Crusher, but Dehok snared Stone’s foot keeping him from following up, and Spade proved 3rd time is the charm, finally hitting his finisher, and putting Stone away, bringing the count to 1 and 1 with neither team taking the advantage this time around.
Then it was time for the main event. I got the chance to speak with World Champ Terry Allen before the show in an interview for the next issue of POWW magazine, and he disclosed that he thought this would be one hard fought brutal contest between him and X-Con and he truly wasn’t kidding. The Fox Lake crowd has always had a soft spot for X-Con, and tonight proved no exception, with possibly even more of the convict crew in the crowd than usual. The Champ didn’t let it get to him however, playing it cool and mugging for the crowd.
The bell sounded to start the contest, and Allen showed that he was not intimidated by the size of his opponent, or the noise from the crowd, stepping up to verbally spar with the challenger before shoving X-Con to get things under way. Both men were laying into each other with brutally stiff shots, until Allen’s speed proved to be too much for X-Con to keep up with. But X-Con’s size allowed him to keep a solid base rendering Allen’s fast paced arsenal almost useless. Allen switched it up, letting his experience in the ring give him the advantage in the ground game, but X-Con continued to out-muscle Allen, turning Allen’s hurricanrana attempt into a sit down face buster. Allen went outside to regain his composure, but as he returned to the ring X-Con gave him no quarter, laying into him with vicious clubbing blows and keeping Allen grounded. X-Con tried to put the Champ away with two brutal elbows that almost collapsed the chest of Terry Allen. But Allen proved why it is they call him “Tenacious” by kicking out of the pin attempt.
X-Con turned his attention to the right leg of Allen, furthering the damage that would keep the Champ on the mat instead of in the air. Allen managed to get to his feet, and the crowd erupted into competing “Terry” and “X-Con” chants. Allen stepped out to the ring apron, vaulting over the ropes to land a huge leg drop and following it with a rolling senton bomb. His attempt to put X-Con away was cut off though as X-Con clotheslined Allen right out of his boots. Both men kept the fight going, but the wear and tear was starting to show. X-Con, not one to hesitate to do whatever it takes to win, sneaks a foreign object into the ring and uses it to choke Allen out of view of the ref.
Terry Allen still not 100% coming out of the ladder match at Slamfest still managed to fight out, and with a series of head butts and punches managed to gain some momentum, locking X-Con in the sharpshooter. X-Con’s manager James Staublein distracted the ref, saving his man and bringing the wrath of “Sexy” Sandra D. As Allen, frustrated, released the hold, X-Con rolled to the outside to aid his manager, and was rewarded for his efforts by slaps from both the women of OC Sandra D and Nikki. X-Con returns to the ring, and Allen attempts a flying cross body, but X-Con ducks and Allen goes over the ropes and to the ring apron. X-Con follows with a slam on Allen, but isn’t able to go for the pin and both men are down. As the ref begins his count, both men rise to their feet, and Terry Allen once again locks in the sharpshooter, this time X-Con is unable to escape, and red faced- taps out.
Terry Allen didn’t get a chance to celebrate however, as soon as the bell sounded, former Champ Brandon Bishop stormed the ring but Allen managed to get the upper hand. Bishop demands a rematch stating that Allen can’t pin him for the belt. Deputy Commish Ruff Crossing comes to the ring and asks Terry Allen if he thinks Bishop should get a rematch. Allen- not one to turn down a fight, says he’s up for it, and Ruff Crossing says that the World Title Rematch will take place in Woodstock on the March 15th!
Look forward to seeing you all there!
