I was live at the first “Great Lakes Knock Down Drag Out” MMA Cage Fight Show held at the Lake County Sports Center in Waukegan, IL on Apr. 26 2008 while on a visit up here with the family.
Crowd was about 400-500 or so with an octagon cage on a indoor soccer field. Not a sellout but pretty busy. Mostly white men 18-49 with a few TapOut shirts. Fighter records are posted when they were announced. Fights were set at 3 rounds at 3 minutes each.
1) Mike Sanchez (Team Street) d. James Alexander (Des Moines MMA) via rear naked choke at 1:53 of round 2.
2) Dave WazWaz (Combat-Do; Cicero, IL, 2-0) d. Chris Spect (Albert Hill Fight Club) w/ guillotine choke at 1:31 in round 1.
3) Jeff Lavalle (Hackneys Combat) d. Steve McVay (1-2) with a rear naked choke at 1:45 of round 1.
4) Marco Daniels d. Charles Rummel via rear naked choke at 1:34 in round 2.
5) Nate “Teddy Bear” Williams (Des Moines) d. Brad Hand (Albert Hill) with an arm bar at 2:01 of the first round. Williams pounded Hand early and often and got a solid lock on the bar before the stoppage.
6) Rey Garza (Combat-Do) d. Jaime Johnson (Sixels Fight Club, 1-2) in 26 seconds flat with a brutal spinning back fist. Garza came at Johnson with a few kicks, rushed him and knocked Johnson out cold with a spinning left. They brought the stretcher out for Johnson. Standing ovation as Garza did a backflip and posed on the cage. I don’t recall a fight on Spike TV with a brutal knockout like that in 2008 so far. They actually took the intermission at this point to treat Johnson, who walked out on his own power after a few minutes. The announcer actually said “Holy s**t, that was a spinning back fist,” on the mic after the break.
7) Alan Sheperd (Des Moines, 3-0) d. Brad Mckow (Combat-Do, 1-1) via majority decision. First round close. Sheperd got more take downs in the latter two rounds. One judge scored the fight a 28-28 draw. The other two scored 29-28 for Sheperd, which I also scored as well. Best fight of the night.
8) Adam Taylor (Des Moines) d. Alexander Washington in 1:23 of round 1 with a rear naked choke. Pretty quick.
I lost my pen at this point. So the rest is not 100% accurate.
9) Joe Hand (Des Moines) d. Nate Markas via unanimous decision. Hand had the better standup and ground, but Markas did some damage in the final round. Judges scored 30-27 twice and a 29-27.
10) Chris Ruble d. some pudgy dude in cargo shorts in the first round with a submission. The big guy was announced as 33 years old, and tried his best.
11) Javier Vega (Hackneys Combat, 3-2) d. James Hannah (Albert Hill) via triangle choke in the first round. Hannah caught a kick and got a take down, but Vega worked hard to get the submission. Vega talked on the mic a bit after the show.
Next show in the building is set for Sept. 13. All the winners got trophies after their matches.
