Glad to be back POWW fans, and I couldn't possibly have picked a better night, emotion was high, the 375 fans in the EGV were hot and the action was through the roof... I could go on and on, but rather than try to tell you in the abstract just how amazing the show was- why don't I just tell you what happened and you can see for yourself?
To kick the night off right, Jimmy Blaze came down to the ring, and announced the first inductees into the POWW Entertainment Hall Of Fame, two of the men who trained him and one of the great Chicago Tag Teams of all time- The Dream Warriors: Screamer and Brood. After a great show of respect for the two men, and for Jimmy as well, from the crowd, it was time to start the show.
Up first was the Texas Tornado tag match for the POWW Tag Team Titles, with American History Next challenging the Champs Pure Evil with special guest refs- Wild Mayhem.
Hardcore Craig made short work of Scott Spade in the initial exchange, leaving both members of AHN to lay down a heavy beating on Dehok, even using Spade's chain to pound into "The Chosen One", followed by Steve Stone using a push broom in a manor that could only be described as graphic to further the punishment. Spade made numerous attempts to get up and back into the fray, but AHN kept him firmly out of the match, making this essentially a 2 on 1 (4 on 1 if you count the open ended refing by Wild Mayhem) battle. A series of miscues between Spade and Dehok saw the two crack each other at various times with Dehok's pitchfork, before a tandem sitdown powerbomb on Dehok put him away for the 3 count, giving us new Tag Champs- American History Next. As AHN and Wild Mayhem congratulated and left for the back, Spade and Dehok got into a shoving and shouting match that saw Taylor Made leave with Dehok, and Scott Spade stand alone at the ring.
Up next it was Nick H's new boy Tony Scarpone against Joey Cece in a one on one confrontation. The two men proved to be an even match in the power game trading shoulder blocks until Cece sidestepped and tripped Scarpone, sending Scarpone to the outside to seek guidance from Nick. Cece gave chase and cornered Scarpone, locking him in a double chickenwing and allowing the fans to get a few shots in, but soon Scarpone backdroped Cece onto the apron from the outside, and with that the big man began to pick apart the back of Cece, including the use of an impressive lingering vertical suplex. Cece managed to fight his way out of a powerbomb attempt, nailing the spear and picking up the victory, but Nick H stormed the ring after the bell had sounded and with Cece distracted, Scarpone nailed "The Pitbull" with a vicious sitdown powerbomb.
The heated rivalry between X-Con and Ruff Crossing continued in EGV on this night, with the crowd firmly behind Crossing in this one. Crossing took an early advantage, getting Con in the corner and going up for the prerequisite 10 strikes to the noggin, but on the 7th Con wisely ducked out and bounced Crossing's face off the top turn buckle. Furthering the damage with big leg and elbow drops to the body of Crossing gave Con a 2 count, and Crossing's attempts to fight out saw him on the receiving end of a slam that shook the building. Con was a little cocky on his pin attempt and it cost him as Crossing managed to recover, and following a shoulder tackle from the top rope, and a russian leg sweep from the 2nd rope, there was little left to do but nail the pump handle driver for the pin, letting Ruff Crossing take home the victory on this exchange.
Up next was the first ever one on one Women's match in POWW Entertainment, and it saw the vicious vixen Melanie Cruise take on Shimmer's first ever Champion- Sara Del Rey. To date the women Cruise has stood toe to toe with have been dwarfed by the feminine powerhouse, but Del Rey was clearly going to be a tough competetor, giving up little in size and strength, and holding more in ring experience. The two were even back and forth for the entirety of the match up, with Cruise often resorting to a hairpull to wrangle the hard scrapping Del Rey, and Del Rey showcased her own strength by brickwalling multiple clothesline attempts by Cruise. The Royal Butterfly suplex from Del Rey was the end for Cruise as the pinfall was counted, and Del Rey celebrated a victory in her first appearance in POWW.
The First Ever in Chicagoland Wrestling History Dumpster Match for the Regional Title between Champion Kanoa, and the man he had beaten for the Belt, his former tag partner Chris Cairo was the next match up, and this took the rivalry to a whole new level. Kanoa came out first, and was promptly attacked by Cairo who popped out of the dumpster catching the "Flyin' Hawaiian" off guard. The two men brawled outside the dumpster, and both of them to the inside of the dumpster, but neither could close the lid, and they took the fight into the ring. Cairo was in full control riding the momentum of his surprise attack at the beginning until an enzugiri turned the tide, followed by a swanton from the top rope that would've put Cairo away in an average match, but Ref Bob Parrella reminded Kanoa that the only way to win is to close the lid on your opponent in the dumpster, and so the pinfall was abandoned. Cairo managed to regain footing after Kanoa's snafu, the "Lost Soul" wheeled the dumpster into Kanoa's head, but Kanoa refused to be put away, and Cairo began to take items from his cart to brutalize Kanoa's left leg with in an attempt to take away the aerial game, and furthering the damage with a figure 4. Kanoa managed to roll and reverse the hold, followed by a shining wizard, but Cairo rallied with the crowd behind him, and unleashing a flurry of fists and feet managed to put Kanoa in the dumpster. Melanie Cruise came out to prevent the lid being shut, but Sara Del Rey took care of that by putting Cruise in the dumpster as well, and with the lids slammed shut it was all over, and your new (and first ever two time) POWW Regional Champion is Chris Cairo.
The heat between The M.O.B. and former member Brandon Bishop has been intense, and with Bishop's turn away from the bad guys in black, he's picked up a few friends in POWW Owner Jimmy Blaze, and POWW Commish Rick Paradise, and so with Bishop, Blaze, and Paradise in one corner, and Justin James, Black Iron, and Trevor Blanchard in the other, it was a 6 man tag for the ages. The M.O.B. came to the ring openly mocking their opponants, with James using a walker to get to the ring waving a flag in parody of his uncle, Black Iron with a long blond goattee and hair glued onto his mask, along with a gallon of water and a kendo stick as a rough interpretation of Jimmy Blaze, and Blanchard struck a less impressive pose in the style of Brandon Bishop. A vibrant "U.S.A." chant from the crowd in support of Bishop as he stepped into the ring to face Blanchard, and Blanchard offered to make this all go away if Bishop would just rejoin the M.O.B., Bishop declined and Blanchard struck him with a cheap shot to get things under way. Bishop regained footing but all three members of M.O.B. rushed the ring, and Bishop sent them all back out again in short order, throwing James out to land on top of Blanchard and Iron, followed by a leap over the top rope himself to take out all 3 men. Back in the ring Bishop continued to work over Blanchard, tagging in Paradise and Blaze to continue to assault, but Blanchard managed to escape, tagging James who was quickly dispatched, bringing Iron in, and Blaze went for the mask causing Iron to flee from the ring. All 6 men continued to rotate in and out of the match at a quick pace until the M.O.B. managed to get the ref turned around and isolate Blaze until a top rope fall away slam on James turned things around, allowing the tag to Bishop who cleaned house. A top rope cross body followed by a torture rack made it appear as though the match was won, but Black Iron sprayed the mist into the eyes of Bishop, allowing Blanchard to go for the DDT, but Bishop had his opponent well scouted, breaking away from the DDT, and nailing the Pedegree for the pinfall. With the loss the M.O.B. is now suspended from in ring competition for the next 30 days. Justin James was dragged back into the ring and whipped with a belt by Rick Paradise who said it was something he should've done years ago, and with that the M.O.B. was sent to the back, and Jimmy Blaze took the mic and announced that there was another man being inducted into the POWW Hall Of Fame- Brandon Bishop. The locker room emptied to show their support for Bishop and the crowd was on their feet with "Thank You Brandon" chants as everyone honored Bishop who will soon be departing for Iraq. Bishop expressed his gratitude to the fans, the wrestlers, and the business itself. Even Trevor Blanchard- beaten just moments earlier, offered his respect and well wishes draping an American Flag over the shoulders of Bishop before heading back to the back.
One last announcement was made by Rick Paradise as Jimmy Blaze celebrated his 18th anniversary in pro wrestling on that night.
There was one last match to happen, and it was quite possibly the most violently passionate encounter we've seen yet, as Eric Freedom challenged Terry Allen for the POWW World Title in a Fans Bring the Weapons Street Fight.
Terry Allen came to the ring unshaven, shadows under his eyes, with an intense stare and steely determination unlike anything we've ever seen since the abduction of his wife Sandra D by the deranged hippy. Freedom got on the mic before the bell rang and told TA that all it would take to make this all end and to get his wife back, would be for TA to lay down and let Freedom pin him. Prodding and taunting TA, Freedom continued to lay it on thick, telling TA that it wasn't about pride or the belt, but his duty as a husband to protect his wife and get her back safely. TA contemplated long and hard before laying down, but as Freedom tentatively went for the cover TA kicked out after 2, and began to lay into Freedom nailing a choke bomb, a Thesz press, and beating him to the outside of the ring. From there it was a beating of ungodly proportion as TA bloodied the hippy with metal trays, garbage can lids, a kendo stick, a sledgehammer, and numerous other items. The action was intense and scattered around the building, and 2 cameras were required to follow it all, so I had to put down my pen to help capture it. As TA stood over a cowering Freedom, the hippy told his that Sandra was here, in the building, and sent his lackey to go get her. A fake Sandra was brought into the building through one entrance, and with TA sufficiently distracted, Freedom put him away, capturing the POWW World Title, before running for the other exit where the real Sandra D was held screaming for help. TA gave chase out of the building but the result was clear, Freedom now holds everything that Terry Allen holds dear. How will this affect our now former World Champion? Only time will tell...
